Russian court rejects move to ban Hindu scripture

Thursday, December 29, 2011

A judge in Tomsk, Russia drew a round of applause from the court room as she dismissed charges of extremism against the Bhagavad Gita As It Is, a Russian commented translation of the Bhagavad Gita published by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. This decision put an end to the six-month-long trial of the book accused by the state prosecutors of fostering “social discord” and “incitement to religious hatred”.

The Indian Foreign Ministry, which had been urging Moscow to avert the possible ban they termed as “absurd”, welcomed the verdict calling it “a sensible resolution of a sensitive issue” which “demonstrates yet again that the people of India and Russia have a deep understanding of each other’s cultures and will always reject any attempt to belittle our common civilizational values” and thanked the Russian government for their support. Indian Ambassador to Russia Ajai Mahotra also stated that the court decision “deserves to be applauded”.

The controversial court case on the Bhagavad Gita, an ancient text regarded sacred by millions of Hindus, had threatened to become a stumbling block in traditionally strong Indo-Russian relations as it caused political and societal turmoil in India, with the Indian Parliament stalled over the proposed ban and Hindu activists burning Russian flags. The trial also evoked strong criticism from the international media.

China detains and beats mourners for Zhao Ziyang

Thursday, January 27, 2005

BEIJING, China –The People’s Republic of China intensified security to prevent mourners attending funeral in Beijing for Zhao Ziyang. Mr. Zhao was the former Communist Party secretary general who was purged for opposing the 1989 military crackdown on the Tiananmen Square student movement. He died two weeks ago at age 85, having spent the last fifteen years of his life under house arrest. According to a story released by the Agence France-Presse anonymous witnesses said the government detained several people in Beijing. They claim some of these people were severely beaten.

A man who preferred to be anonymous said: “A man from Henan province was beaten badly. His left eyeball looked like it was beaten out of its socket and he had a one inch cut to his right eye. An elderly woman from Shandong province was beaten to a point where she couldn’t move and a man from Hunan province was also beaten.”

According to the witness the police argued Zhao was a political criminal. They said:”Why are you commemorating him? You’re clearly opposing the government.”

The government of China has already received criticism for what some feel to be intimidation of activists and other anti-democratic acts like censorship [1],

Sunflower oil saves at-risk newborns from infection

Saturday, March 5, 2005Simply massaging low birth weight babies with sunflower seed oil can protect them from potentially fatal infections.

Infections and complications from preterm birth cause more than half of all neonatal deaths, and very low birth weight babies are particularly vulnerable.

Preterm babies have immature skin that lacks a protective film called vernix that has antimicrobial properties.

In some countries, such as India, newborns are routinely massaged with mustard oil.

But mustard oil, says Gary Darmstadt of John Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, can delay recovery of the skin barrier and have a toxic effect on skin.

Seeking an alternative low-cost product, Darmstadt and colleagues experimented with sunflower oil and an ointment called Aquaphor that comprises petrolatum, mineral oil, mineral wax and lanolin.

The researchers tested the treatments on 497 newborns (72 hours old or less) and preterm babies (less than 33 weeks gestation) between 1998 and 2003 in Bangladesh.

They applied the treatments to the entire body besides the scalp and face three times daily for the first 14 days and then twice daily until discharge.

Babies treated with sunflower oil were found 41% less likely to develop infections than controls.

“Evidence is emerging that the skin is much more important as a barrier to infection than previously recognized, particularly in preterm infants whose skin is underdeveloped,” says Darmstadt. “The good news is that treatment is available to strengthen the function of the skin as a barrier in these vulnerable newborns.”

Specialized Surgeons Solve Difficult Problems With The Skeletal System

byMichael Gilmore

The human skeletal system is an amazingly resilient structure. Encountering large, repetitive stresses throughout the course of the average person’s day, it nonetheless typically does its duty without complaint for decades. Over time, however, even relatively small problems with it can develop into larger ones, especially insofar as these points of weakness are called upon to endure further stress.

Those who are active in sports, too, often run into issues with joints and bones, as these activities sometimes push their bodies to their very limits. Others suffer from degenerative or other sorts of diseases which attack the skeleton and supporting muscles directly, some of which can result in victims becoming bed-bound or worse before long at all. For many people, then, the services of an orthopedic surgeon are incredibly valuable, as these can allow them to recover from difficulties which would never heal on their own.

Having completed fundamental medical training like all other doctors, a future orthopedic surgeon in Pensacola, FL embarks upon a training program through which they acquire the specialized skills needed to become expert with the human musculoskeletal system. This further course of study supplements the important basic medical skills which the candidate has already acquired, equipping the student to handle the crucial and delicate tasks required in orthopedic surgery. The best surgeons of this sort combine very high levels of intelligence and memory, necessary for absorbing and dealing with the many medical facts that must be mastered, with stamina and coordination that will ensure that surgeries themselves are successful.

In fact, the field of orthopedic surgery is so complex that many choose to specialize further. The issues surrounding the joints of the hand, for example, are considered particular enough that those suffering from problems with them are often advised to seek out surgeons who deal only with that part of the body. Likewise with the shoulder, knee, and spine: Many surgeons eventually focus solely on handling these parts of the body and no others, figuring in that way to offer their patients the highest possible level of expertise. In any case, today’s orthopedic surgeons in Pensacola, FL are capable of providing relief for a great number of issues that were once assumed to afford no hope for recovery. For more inflammation, visit Panhandle Orthopaedics.

Building collapses in Manhattan

Monday, July 10, 2006

New York City —A four-story building on 62nd Street in Manhattan collapsed after an explosion Monday. Both the White House and New York Fire Department have said the explosion was not caused by a terrorist attack. The New York Fire Department said that the owner of the building, Dr. Nicholas Bartha, might have deliberately caused the explosion in a suicide attempt after a difficult divorce.

Wikipedia has more about this subject:

According to the latest reports, five people were injured by the blast, one of whom was hospitalised in critical condition. An additional ten firefighters were injured in the following rescue operation. No deaths have been reported.

Most sources give the cause as a natural gas leak that ignited; a ConEd spokesperson said that someone had reported a gas leak to them about one and a half hours before the explosion took place. The resulting fire, which began in the basement, burned strongly for some time, but was later brought under control by firefighters.

Numerous people described the shockwave from the blast as being similar to an earthquake.

Zimbabwe submits to popular pressure: foreign currencies now legal tender

Thursday, January 29, 2009

Zimbabwe has decided to abandon its currency, the Zimbabwean dollar, in favour of other currencies.

Acting Finance Minister Patrick Chinamasa announced today that Zimbabweans will be allowed to make transactions in other currencies along with the local currency. “In line with the prevailing practices by the general public, [the] government is therefore allowing the use of multiple foreign currencies for business transactions alongside the Zimbabwean dollar,” he said, adding that the Zimbabwean dollar will not be removed from circulation and would be used alongside other currencies.

This decision comes during the current period of hyperinflation, which has massively devalued the Zimbabwean dollar. Banknotes up to $100 trillion have been printed, despite the removal of ten zeroes from the currency last summer to try to make transactions easier. The official inflation rate, last updated in July 2008, was 231,000,000% a year, although independent estimates place the number as high as 6.5×10108, or 6.5 quindecillion novemdecillion, percent.

Up to now, only vendors with licenses were legally able to accept foreign currencies, although the practice was widespread — private businesses altogether refuse to accept the unstable Zimbabwean dollar.

Large sections of the workforce, including teachers and doctors, have gone on strike because hyperinflation rapidly renders their wages worthless. Representative groups said salaries, now measured in trillions of dollars, are insufficient to pay for even the bus fare to work.

Zimbabwe also faces other crises, including a cholera epidemic that has claimed the lives of over 3,000 people, according to statistics from the World Health Organisation.

Firefighters rescue nearly a dozen animals in Buffalo, New York house fire

Friday, June 22, 2007

Buffalo, New York —A three alarm fire at a house owned by John and Evelyn Bencinich, two of the initiators of a lawsuit filed against the Elmwood Village Hotel proposal in Buffalo, required firefighters to rescue eight cats and two dogs in Buffalo, New York today.

At about 8:30 (eastern time) firefighters were called to the home on 48 Granger Place to put out a fire that had started in the basement. It quickly spread to the first floor where the main bathroom was destroyed. The fire did not spread to the second floor or attic.

Initial calls said that many animals were inside the house and firefighters quickly worked to rescue all the cats and dogs. At least one cat and one dog had to receive CPR and oxygen, but both are reported to be in stable condition. At least 3 cats are unaccounted for, but after a search of the house, the cats were not believed to have been inside at the time the fire started.

One elderly woman, Anna Bencinich, the mother of Evelyn, was rescued by neighbors who helped her from the burning house.

“There was smoke all over the house. The fire started in the basement and spread to a small portion of the first floor. Two firefighters were injured while fighting the fire and were transported to Erie County Medical Center,” said Division Fire Chief Thomas Ashe who also said that sections of the kitchen wall at the back of the house had to be torn out to stop the fire from spreading through the walls.

One firefighter is being treated for bite injuries to his face that he received while attempting to rescue a dog. The other firefighter was treated for injuries he received to his hand, which was believed to have been caused by glass or a cat scratching him. The names of the injured firefighters are not known. The injuries are said to not be life threatening.

According to witness reports, the home owners had a new water heater installed just last week, but it is not known if the fire was caused by the heater.

“We believe the fire was caused by an electrical (malfunction). An investigation is being conducted,” said Battalion Chief Joe Fahey who also added that they did not believe arson was the cause.

What Should You Look For In A Bookkeeping Services?

by

Mark Bonney

Even if your accounting skills are strong, still it becomes necessary to hire a professional (or professionals) when your business grows and finances need extra attention. For business spending and personal spending are as different as business profits and personal income. To stop mixing up of your finances, how do you choose your bookkeeping service provider(s)?An owner or an entrepreneur functions in multiple ways. They are anything between being product development supervisor and the chief sales strategist; too many things in the head at once. Even hiring and customer service! All thats enough to keep you busy 24/7, so where do you fit in doing the bookkeeping yourself? It takes time; solving financials are often labyrinthine procedures. Even if your chief expertise is accountancy, youll lack the time to fit in the smaller figures. You will only find time to check the end result. Its crucial; if handled poorly, it will ruin all your hard work.Maybe you are thinking If its a small business, then its responsibilities must also be small. True! Absolutely! For you! It is your wish to see yourself the same where you belong today even after ten years. A growing business reflects itself through its bookkeeping volumes and habits; unless you keep ready the basic framework for a larger business in the future, you will suffer. So, before the first quarter is over, your startup should be ready for the future bigger bookkeeping burdens.Todays discussion; however, is not about laying its structure. It is more inclined towards people who can lay that structure for you. So, as a rule of thumb, forget them who just deal with the basics. You need someone who is competent in handling fairly large accounts and is doing so for a considerable time, but not at a price that might just exceed your annual profit. We already spoke about prioritising bookkeeping to keep clear from complications arising later. For this purpose, theres a vast range of software; however you must invest in the right one and in people who are good with what you choose. Better, ask them to identify the tools that are needed the most. Individual or a team, your chosen bookkeeping service must get fully aware of your business activities and pick from the different options according to the company size, growth rate and location. They must be aware of equivalent laws of Personal Loan Finance and tax practices in other countries to do this well. Now comes how much you should pay. Both the accounting software (license renewals, mostly) and its operators will be a recurring cost. So, while the most robust and expensive software package might seem enticing, it might be well-suited only for an MNC or a large enterprise. Spend on it when you near that status. For now, any good small-businesses software would do well. More complicated software shall also need more skilled operators, which will also cost you more. Theres no point if your appointed Business Finance Services team cant utilize it fully.A complete financial and system analysis is an important first step in figuring out what happens next. Once we have an understanding of just what the issues are and what needs to be done to achieve the outcomes the business owners desire, we can begin to put into place the necessary procedures to maximize profit and performance of any business.Article Source: eArticlesOnline.com
