Woman survives being run over by a train in suicide attempt
Tuesday, June 2, 2009
A 56-year-old Israeli woman has been hospitalized after attempting to commit suicide by letting a high-speed passenger train run her over on Sunday. Security cameras caught the entire incident on tape.
The video shows the woman walking onto train tracks in the city of Beit Yehoshua as a railroad worker and bystanders watched her lie down. Seconds later, a train ran her over. After the train passed, the woman got up, brushed herself off, walked back to her car and drove away.
Authorities tracked the woman down and took her to a local hospital for treatment. She only suffered minor injuries to her head.
Police say she tried to end her life after losing her job as a travel agent.
Train derailed by collision with semi in Saskatchewan, Canada
Tuesday, March 22, 2005
Twenty-four cars of a west-bound Canada Pacific train were thrown from the tracks after the train collided with a semi tractor-trailer in poor weather and visibility near Regina, Saskatchewan around 11 a.m. Tuesday morning. The driver was rushed to hospital.
The accident took place on a level section of Highway 46 just north of Highway 1, about 25 kilometres east of Regina. The RCMP spokesperson reported the crossing is marked with lights, but weather may have played a role.
“Road conditions were wet and sloppy and it’s foggy,” RCMP Cpl. Brian Jones said to the CBC. The bad weather, including a heavy overnight snowfall, may have contributed to the accident.
Most of the 93 cars in the train were empty bulk transit cars, used for moving agricultural products such as grains. The RCMP report that neither train or truck were transporting any hazardous materials.
A leak at the Sellafield nuclear reprocessing facility on Cumbrian coast, England
Monday, May 9, 2005
At the Sellafield reprocessing plant, a leak in the process was spotted on April 19. The leak did not cause danger to people or the environment but it disturbed the normal operation of the plant.
Workers at the plant noticed a discrepancy in the amount of material being reprocessed that enters pipes that lead to a set of centrifuges and the amount of material actually arriving at the centrifuges. They used remote cameras to find the crack where the material was escaping; over twenty tonnes have leaked into a steel lined chamber.
The material, consisting of mostly uranium and some plutonium dissolved in nitric acid, would have been reprocessed in the centrifuges. The large stainless steel chamber that now contains the spilled material is too dangerous to enter due to radioactivity, though it poses no danger to those inside or outside the plant.
The plant has been shut down pending repairs.
Scalping In Forex Trading: Small But Sure Profits

The foreign exchange (forex) market is a very big financial market and, if you want success, you should be looking for forex trading strategies to maximize your potential revenue. Scalping in forex trading is one of the known and well-utilized trading strategies.
Scalping is more dependent on recurrent and short-term forex trades compare to other forex strategies. Actually, scalping is the sole terminology in the world of forex that is the most flamboyant piece. Traders who practice the scalping strategy are called scalpers and they are not after making lots of money on any particular trade. Their main goal is to achieve several very little pips for every trade. They want to earn small profits but frequently so that, at the end of each trading day, they have a considerable large amount of revenue. The time frame when doing scalping can be as short as a minute.
Scalpers are often the source of annoyance of some brokers. They usually do trades on a position even before the broker can fill out his first order. As a result, the brokers can lose money from this transaction. Because of advancement in technology, brokers today have the chance to fill out the orders they receive more quickly so scalping is not much of a nuisance like it was a few years back. Because of this practice of scalpers, majority of online forex broker websites, ban scalpers from getting access and they usually put a limit on the number of trades that you can make per day. In fact, one can trade for only about a dozen of times per day.
If you want to utilize the strategy of scalping which is also called picking, the very first thing that you should do is to search for an online broker who has no issues with scalping method. This task is so easy to be done for the recent years because the presence of forex market online has significantly grown.
Your next step is that you check out the forex broker especially all of the associated fees for every trade. A lot of sites are charging traders around eight point for every spread. Apparently, if your aim is to earn revenue of just some pips for every trade, then a spread which is two to three times of that is a hindrance to become profitable. Anyway, given the fact that there are scalpers who can still become profitable using brokers that have high spreads, it is enough proof of how powerful scalping in forex trading can be.
In a lot of ways, the central focus of scalping strategy is the extra special attention the trader gives to the forex market movements. As the trader continuously and closely watch the market, the scalper can hypothetically predict when the market is going in the middle or up or down. The skilled scalper will then go out to buy a currency pair whenever he or she feels that it s appropriate and then this pair of currency is sold as soon as the scalper sees that he or she can reap some few pips that are profitable.

Thursday, October 22, 2020
2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor candidate Wayne Tseng answered some questions about his campaign for the upcoming election from Wikinews. The Lord Mayor election in the Australian city is scheduled to take place this week.
Tseng runs a firm called eTranslate, which helps software developers to make the software available to the users. In the candidate’s questionnaire, Tseng said eTranslate had led to him working with all three tiers of the government. He previously belonged to the Australian Liberal Party, but has left since then, to run for mayorship as an independent candidate.
Tseng is of Chinese descent, having moved to Australia with his parents from Vietnam. Graduated in Brisbane, Tseng received his PhD in Melbourne and has been living in the city, he told Wikinews. Tseng also formed Chinese Precinct Chamber of Commerce, an organisation responsible for many “community bond building initiatives”, the Lord Mayor candidate told Wikinews.
Tseng discussed his plans for leading Melbourne, recovering from COVID-19, and “Democracy 2.0” to ensure concerns of minorities in the city were also heard. Tseng also focused on the importance of the multi-culture aspect and talked about making Melbourne the capital of the aboriginals. Tseng also explained why he thinks Melbourne is poised to be a world city by 2030.
Tseng’s deputy Lord Mayor candidate Gricol Yang is a Commercial Banker and works for ANZ Banking Group.
Currently, Sally Capp is the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, the Victorian capital. Capp was elected as an interim Lord Mayor in mid-2018 after the former Lord Mayor Robert Doyle resigned from his position after sexual assault allegations. Doyle served as the Lord Mayor of Melbourne for almost a decade since 2008.
Several groups seek to purchase Saturn auto brand
Thursday, May 7, 2009
Penske Automotive Group, Inc., an Ohio-based investment group and Telesto Ventures have indicated separately that they are interested in purchasing the Saturn auto brand from General Motors (GM).
According to The Wall Street Journal, Nissan-Renault is interested in purchasing Saturn. Bloomberg, however, indicated that Nissan-Renault may be a partner of Penske’s potential bid. If Penske acquired the brand, they would distribute Saturn vehicles and outsource the assembly.
GM revealed that the Saturn brand along with Saab and Hummer were up for sale when unveiling their restructuring plans to Congress for governmental loans. While the Pontiac brand was originally to be a niche brand, GM had changed their plans recently and decided to eliminate the brand.
Telesto Ventures is an investment group that includes private equity firm Black Oak Partners LLC of Oklahoma City and several Saturn dealerships. Initially, Telesto will purchase Saturn branded cars from GM then act as a general retailer for foreign brands. Telesto is in talks with several foreign manufacturers.
The Ohio group includes many former senior auto company managers plus private financial backers, chemists and engineers who live in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Florida. This group plans to initially purchase cars from GM then purchase existing but closed plants due to automaker restructuring. Additionally, one of the partners indicated a willingness to accept some “legacy” cost in relation to the United Auto Workers. The Ohio group is also pursuing possible loans or other support from national and state governments.
GM is reviewing several offers for Saturn. GM has contracted with S.J. Girsky & Co. to advise them on the sale.
Business Card Tips What Does Your Business Card Say About You?

What does your current business card say about you? Do you know? Are you losing clients with your card?
You may think of a business card as just simple information that you pass out to clients or potential clients. But it’s actually a lot more than that.
Within the first 3 seconds of handing someone your card, they will make an assessment about your business by looking at your card.
They will decide within that first 3 seconds if you are professional, trustworthy and worth doing business with. Of course, there are other things that play into that decision as well – but your business card can make or break an already positive impression.
So how can you make sure you are sending the right message? Here are 3 key business card tips that will make sure you look professional and trustworthy:
#1 Make It Full Color
While years ago, black and white cards were ok, today with the advent of so many professional printers, it’s easy to step up to the plate and add some color. Full color cards are the best option.
People are drawn to full color cards – just as they prefer full color movies or full color pictures over black and white. Black and white cards say you couldn’t afford to step up to full color – or that you don’t care very much about the impression you make. It’s kind of like wearing an old track suit to a business meeting.
#2 Use a Heavy Card Stock
If you’re trying to send the impression of professionalism – and especially if you are appealing to the more affluent client base, you need a heavy card stock. Try a 14 pt. stock or higher.
Even if you have to pay a bit more for a heavy card stock, it’s worth it. One of the first things people notice is the thickness and heaviness of the card you give them. And a lightweight card that’s been printed off your computer at home is a huge turn-off.
#3 Print on Both the Front and Back
Most online business card printers will give you the option of printing on one side or both sides. If you can, I’d suggest you print the main information on the front and use the back for something as well.
Using the back is handy because, again, it sends the message that your business is successful. Plus if your card is placed face down on a table or something, the message printed on the back will catch people’s eye and they may want to pick up your card to read more.
Also, the back is another way to build your brand and advertise your services. For example, if you’re an artist you may want to showcase a picture of your work on the back. If you’ve won awards, you may want to list them on the back.
You may want to put your logo and favorite inspirational saying on the back. Other people put a coupon on the back (or a link to an online coupon website) which may help ensure people keep your card handy.
Plus, it doesn’t cost that much more to print on the front and back so it may be well worth your time.
To me a thick, full color card with printing on the front and back tells me this person is professional and probably has more business than he can handle. So I would definitely want to do business with him. Make sure your next business card has these 3 things and you’re well on your way to making a great first impression!

Gay marriage banned in three states; other ballot measures decided
Sunday, November 9, 2008
Voters in California, Florida and Arizona voted on Tuesday to ban gay marriage, bringing about a victory for conservatives on a day which did not bring many conservative wins.
Meanwhile, voters in Colorado, South Dakota and California voted on measures which would have restricted abortion in those states. In Massachusetts and Michigan, voters passed measures that loosen marijuana laws. Finally, in the state of Washington a measure was passed that allows physician-assisted suicide.
The California ballot measure, Proposition 8, overturns the recent June ruling by the California State Supreme Court in the case In re Marriage Cases which reversed a 1977 statute passed by the California State Legislature and a 2000 ballot measure, Proposition 22, which also banned same-sex marriage by defining marriage as between a man and a woman. The wording of Proposition 8 is identical to Proposition 22. It was noted that many of the African-Americans and Latinos who cast their votes for Obama, also voted for the measure. The measure passed at 52% to 48%.
Lesbian comedian Ellen DeGeneres noted, “This morning, when it was clear that Proposition 8 had passed in California, I can’t explain the feeling I had. I was saddened beyond belief. Here we just had a giant step toward equality and then on the very next day, we took a giant step away.”
| Okay, so I am taking that to mean I do not have to pay my state taxes because I am not a full citizen. | ||
Singer Melissa Etheridge, who is also a lesbian, stated that she would no longer pay taxes due to the passing of Proposition 8, announcing in a blog post, “Okay, so I am taking that to mean I do not have to pay my state taxes because I am not a full citizen.”
Also in California, voters rejected a measure which would require parental notification for a minor to receive an abortion. The measure was rejected with the same percentage as Proposition 8, 52% to 48%. Meanwhile in Colorado, voters rejected a measure that would define life as beginning at conception. While the measure did not specifically mention abortion it would have required legislators and courts to confront legal rights for fetuses – effectively preventing abortion. The measure was defeated in a wide margin, 73% to 27%
In South Dakota, voters also defeated an anti-abortion measure which would have outlawed abortion in all cases except in the case of rape, incest or if the mother’s health was in serious question. If passed, the law would most likely have been challenged as unconstitutional.
In Michigan, voters approved a measure which legalizes medical marijuana. Meanwhile, in Massachusetts, voters approved a ballot question that decriminalizes possession of small amounts of marijuana in which the possession of an ounce or less would be punishable by a $100 fine. The measure will also require minors under the age 18 to participate in and complete a drug awareness program and do community service. Failure to do so, would net the minor a $1,000 fine.
“Tonight’s results represent a sea change. Voters have spectacularly rejected eight years of the most intense government war on marijuana since the days of ‘Reefer Madness,'” said Rob Kampia, executive director of the Marijuana Policy Project. “The people were ahead of the politicians on this issue; they recognize and want a more sensible approach to our marijuana policy,” said Whitney Taylor, the chair of Committee for Sensible Marijuana Policy, which backed the Massachusetts proposition.
Also, in Massachusetts, voters overwhelmingly, in every single Massachusetts city and town, rejected a ballot measure which would have eliminated the state income tax by 2010, the ballot measure was sponsored by the Committee for Small Government, which is headed up by two libertarians, Michael Cloud, a Libertarian Party candidate for U.S. Senate in 2002 and Carla Howell, Libertarian Party candidate for governor in the 2002 Massachusetts gubernatorial election.
The last time the income tax elimination measure was on the ballot was in 2002, where it was defeated, narrowly by 45.3%. This stunned supporters of the income tax, who mounted a fierce campaign against the measure this time warning Massachusetts residents that repealing the income tax would have drastic effects on the state’s finances, leading to cuts in services, education and local aid.
Finally, voters passed a question which bans dog racing in Massachusetts, which will lead to the closure of Massachusetts’ two greyhound racing tracks, Raynham-Taunton Greyhound Park and Wonderland Greyhound Park.
The campaign against dog racing was headed up by the Committee to Protect Dogs and endorsed by GREY2K USA and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals along with other animal protection organizations who claimed that dog racing was inhumane as the dogs were stuffed into cramped cages and endured injuries. The measure was opposed by the park owners including George Carney who owns the Rayham-Taunton park and Charles Sarkis, a restaurateur who owns Wonderland.
“We did it. We did it for the dogs,” said Carey Thiel, executive director of GREY2K USA. “For 75 years, greyhounds in our state have endured terrible confinement and suffered serious injuries. We’re better than that,” Thiel added.
One campaign supporter, Sandy Bigelow noted, “It means everything. We’ve worked so hard for the dogs and they heard us. It feels so good. Oh, God, it feels so good.”
George Carney said of the results, “It’s not a very pleasant thing right now. Some of these people have been here 40 years. Here’s a company that did nothing wrong, paid their federal taxes on time, paid the town on time. The town is going to be a severe loser, and a lot of people here dedicated their life to the company.”
| We did it. We did it for the dogs. | ||
Both sides used emotionally-charged advertisements, the anti-racing side showing “sad-eyed greyhounds,” while the pro-racing side highlighted the workers who would be out of work when the tracks close.
Both measures must now come before the Massachusetts Governor’s Council for approval.
A ballot initiative approved by voters in the north-western state of Washington will make it the second state to permit physician-assisted suicide. Initiative 1000 follows the ten-year-old example of the Death With Dignity Act of neighboring Oregon, and will allow physicians to prescribe a lethal dose of medication for a terminally ill patient to administer themselves. It was approved by a margin of 16%, and the ‘Yes’ campaign outspent the ‘No’ campaign by more than three-to-one. The law comes into effect in 2009.
