Pfizer and Microsoft team up against Viagra spam

Sunday, February 13, 2005

New York –”Buy cheap Viagra through us – no prescription required!” Anyone with an active email account will recognize lines like this one. According to some reports, unsolicited advertisements (spam) for Viagra and similar drugs account for one in four spam messages.

BACKGROUND

Spamming remains one of the biggest problems facing email users today. While users and systems administrators have improved their defenses against unsolicited email, many spammers now insert random words or characters into their letters in order to bypass filters. The Wikipedia article Stopping email abuse provides an overview of the various strategies employed by companies, Internet users and systems administrators to deal with the issue.

Ever since pharmaceutical giant Pfizer promised to cure erectile dysfunction once and for all with its blue pills containing the drug sildenafil citrate, spammers have tried to tap into male anxiety by offering prescription-free sales of unapproved “generic” Viagra and clones such as Cialis soft tabs. Legislation like the U.S. CAN-SPAM act has done little to stem the tide of email advertising the products.

Now Pfizer has entered a pledge with Microsoft Corporation, the world’s largest software company, to address the problem. The joint effort will focus on lawsuits against spammers as well as the companies they advertise. “Pfizer is joining with Microsoft on these actions as part of our shared pledge to reduce the sale of these products and to fight the senders of unsolicited e-mail that overwhelms people’s inboxes,” said Jeff Kindler, executive vice president at Pfizer.

Microsoft has filed civil actions against spammers advertising the websites CanadianPharmacy and E-Pharmacy Direct. Pfizer has filed lawsuits against the two companies, and has taken actions against websites which use the word “Viagra” in their domain names. Sales of controlled drugs from Canadian pharmacies to the United States are illegal, but most drugs sold in Canada have nevertheless undergone testing by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. This is not the case for many of the Viagra clones sold by Internet companies and manufactured in countries like China and India. While it was not clear that CanadianPharmacy was actually shipping drugs from Canada, Pfizer’s general counsel, Beth Levine, claimed that the company filled orders using a call center in Montreal, reported the Toronto Star.

For Microsoft’s part, they allege that the joint effort with Pfizer is part of their “multi-pronged attack on the barrage of spam.” As the creator of the popular email program Outlook, Microsoft has been criticized in the past for the product’s spam filtering process. Recently, Microsoft added anti-spam measures to its popular Exchange server. Exchange 2003 now includes support for accessing so-called real-time block lists, or RTBLs. An RTBL is a list of the IP addresses maintained by a third party; the addresses on the list are those of mailservers thought to have sent spam recently. Exchange 2003 can query the list for each message it receives.

British singer George Michael, 53, dies

Wednesday, December 28, 2016

George Michael, a well-known British pop singer and songwriter, died on Christmas Day at the age of 53. Michael was found dead at his home in Oxfordshire, England, by boyfriend Fadi Fawaz.

I am in deep shock. I have lost a beloved friend — the kindest, most generous soul and a brilliant artist.

Michael’s publicist released the following statement to People and Entertainment Weekly: “It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period. The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time.” He also reported that Michael had died of heart failure and “passed away peacefully”.

Sir Elton John said via Instagram, “I am in deep shock. I have lost a beloved friend — the kindest, most generous soul and a brilliant artist. My heart goes out to his family and all of his fans.”

George Michael was born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou in London. Over his multi-decade career, he sold more than 100 million records. Along with co-singer Andrew Ridgeley he became famous as part of the duo band Wham!. Together, Michael and Ridgeley produced several hit songs, such as Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go, Freedom, and Last Christmas. In 1985, Wham! was the first Western band to play in China since the beginning of the country’s opening up strategy. Wham! dissolved in 1986. In 1984, Michael recorded the successful single Careless Whisper. Michael was credited as the solo artist in the United Kingdom and as “Wham! featuring George Michael” in the United States. Michael released a hit solo album Faith in 1987, containing hits like I Want Your Sex.

Michael’s life was troubled by both substance abuse and issues with his sexuality. He initially hid his identity as a gay man from his fans, coming out only after a very public arrest for public lewdness in 1998. He would later be arrested for possession of drugs and driving under the influence of drugs. He was sentenced to eight weeks in prison in 2010 for crashing a Range Rover into a storefront while under the influence of drugs and possession of cannabis.

Michael had a history of transforming his negative experiences into art. He wrote White Light about a serious case of pneumonia that led to his hospitalization in 2011, and the music video for Outside, which followed on the heels of his arrest and coming out, showed scenes of a men’s bathroom, a dance club, and men kissing while in police uniforms. He would perform White Light live at the 2012 London Olympics.

Fire reported at One HSBC Center in downtown Buffalo, New York

Saturday, January 19, 2008

Buffalo, New York — According to scanner frequencies of the Buffalo, New York fire department, smoke was reported on at least five floors at the northeast side at One HSBC Center in downtown Buffalo. The call came in around 10:50 p.m. (Eastern Time) on Friday January 18, not long after the ending of the NHL hockey game: the Sabres versus the Atlanta Thrashers which was held at HSBC Arena, a few blocks away from the tower.

According to firefighters communications the people that were on the 22nd floor made it out of the building safely. Firefighters saw “white smoke of varying intensities, believed to have been electrical” on floors 9 through 13. The source of the smoke was not identified, but the first alarm was on the 13th floor, followed by the 10th then the 9th.

Because of the cold temperatures and wind chills in the 10’s, workers at the tower were allowed back into the first floor, which has been cleared by firefighters earlier in the call.

At 11:41 p.m., firefighters gave the all clear to begin packing up with no conclusion as to where the smoke originated. They used ventilation fans to clear the floors of smoke and then shut them off to see if anymore smoke would reappear, which it did not. Remaining employees and personnel have since been allowed back to work. No damage is reported.

The tower, built in 1970, is the tallest in Buffalo and is home several agencies including the Consulate General of Canada. HSBC currently occupies 75% of the tower which has 40 floors. It stands at 529 feet (161.2 meters) tall.

Stub Hub Fan Codes And Stub Hub Coupons To Save Money}

Submitted by: Mike M.

Let’s talk about how to get access to all the current StubHub fan codes and StubHub coupon codes, and money saving tips and advice for buying tickets to even sold out sports, concert, theater, or Broadway events anywhere in the US using StubHub.

Have you ever searched online for current StubHub fan codes or StubHub coupon codes, and website after website has discount codes that are outdated, or expired? Experiencing this can be very time consuming, and a frustrating endeavor. So, what do you do?

Well, there is a free VIP Newsletter at http://KTownTickets.com that is updated regularly with all the new StubHub fan codes and StubHub coupon codes. It also offers many fascinating tips and inside advice to save you money on your next entertainment ticket purchase. Included are many step by step videos that have been put together making ticket buying easy for anyone, of any age, for any event. These discounts can be used over and over, and by using the discounts and other money saving tips, you could save around $40-$60, or more.

Real quick, lets break down who StubHub is and what they actually do. StubHub may look like a ticket brokerage, but theyre not. The company was founded in 2000 by a couple of Stanford Business School students: Eric Baker and Jeff Fluhr. The premise was simple: provide a secure online ticket exchange where tickets could be re-sold at a set price or auctioned, and sellers guaranteed their money and buyers guaranteed an authentic ticket. Another way to look at it is its similar to a stock market, where the only shares traded are tickets to live events: concerts, Broadway musicals, sporting events, tapings of television shows, movie premieres, you name it. You can even find tickets for lectures or VIP tickets to entertainment events.

StubHub, who sells tickets to events all over the United States, does not buy tickets. Instead, they have created a regulated arena in which people who have bought tickets can sell them, and people looking for tickets can buy them. Some sellers are professional ticket brokers who use StubHub as their place of business. Most sellers, StubHub says, are ordinary citizens or fans, usually season ticketholders who want to get all or some of their cash back for the events they can’t attend. On the other hand if the ‘ordinary citizens or fans’ think they can make a nice profit on tickets to a high-demand event theyll do it.

Best part about StubHub is their Fan Protect buyer guarantee that is:

1. You will get your tickets in time for the event.

2. Your tickets will be authentic and valid for entry.

3. You will receive tickets comparable to or better than the tickets you ordered, or your money back.

4. You will be refunded if the event is cancelled and is not rescheduled.

Eric Baker, co-founder of StubHub says, the reselling of tickets is not going to go away, so the question is how do you make it a better situation for the world that we live in today? I believe this is it.”

World Summit on the Information Society ends in Tunisia

Saturday, November 19, 2005

The World Summit on the Information Society, organized by the International Telecommunication Union, concluded on Friday evening, November 18th, in Tunis, the capital of the north African nation of Tunisia. The event’s organizers intended for the event to “put into motion” the plan for Internet financing and governance developed at the 2003 WSIS summit in Geneva, Switzerland.

The summit was marred by criticism of Tunisia for allowing attacks on journalists and human rights defenders to occur in the days leading up to the event. A French journalist for “Libération” was stabbed and beaten by unidentified men after he reported on local human rights protesters. A Belgian television crew was harassed and forced to hand over footage of Tunisian dissidents, while local human rights defenders were roughed up and prevented from organising a meeting with international civil society groups. A representative from the French media watchdog Reporters Without Borders, Robert Menard, was prevented from disembarking from his Air France flight to Tunis to attend the summit.

During the event, representatives from the Global Voices project were menaced by the Tunisian police as they held their session on “Expression Under Repression.” Speaking at the session were Rebecca MacKinnon, Ethan Zuckerman, Nart Villeneuve, Taurai Maduna, Isaac Mao, and Hossein Derakshan, among others. The interaction with the Tunisian police is related by Amanda Michel of the Berkman Center with the description from an attendee as, “[B]efore the break, a phalanx of secret police (ie scary guys in dark suits) showed up. [T]hey filled the hall outside the room, forcing cancellation of the break for fear that we’d not be allowed to re-start.”

Nicholas Negroponte demonstrated the first working prototype of his $100 laptop.

Avalanche buries cars in Colorado

Saturday, January 6, 2007

An avalanche on U.S. Route 40, which was 100 feet wide and 15 feet deep, has buried many cars, caused other cars to be pushed over the edge of an expressway, and injured eight people, just outside of Denver, Colorado. The avalanche started at 10:30 AM, starting about 12 miles off Interstate 70, and taking three different paths down the mountain before coming to a stop.

“Our crews said it was the largest they have ever seen. It took three paths,” said a spokeswoman for the Colorado Department of Transportation, Stacey Stegman.

All eight (7 adults, 1 minor) have been taken to the St. Anthony Central Hospital in Denver. According to a hospital spokeswoman, all of the victims suffered minor injuries. Seven patients were released on Saturday. There were no casualties.

U.S. route 40 is currently closed to traffic. According to Winter Park spokesman Matt Sugar, there are no plans to close the ski hills. “We’ve gotten calls from all over the country asking if the resort is closed,” he said, “and the answer is no.”

This is the third snow storm to hit the Denver area in three weeks.

Six soldiers struck by car

Saturday, August 12, 2017

Six soldiers of the 35th infantry regiment forming part of France’s Opération Sentinelle were driven into by a car at 8 o’clock in the morning on Wednesday as they moved to their vehicles to relieve the previous shift in Levallois-Perret, a densely populated suburb of Paris.

Two soldiers are seriously injured, the others sustained minor injuries, though none are believed to be life-threatening. No motivation is known yet, but terrorism is suspected. In the opinion of Patrick Balkany, mayor of the city, “It is without any doubt deliberate.” ((fr)) French language: C’est sans aucun doute délibéré

The suspect was arrested after noon by the Brigade de Recherche et d’Intervention (BRI) [Research and Intervention Brigade, an anti-gang force in the French National Police], during which he was injured by five bullets. The suspect is an Algerian man aged 36 living in Val d’Oise, and unknown to police.
