Several groups seek to purchase Saturn auto brand

Thursday, May 7, 2009

Penske Automotive Group, Inc., an Ohio based investment group and Telesto Ventures have indicated separately that they are interested in purchasing the Saturn auto brand from General Motors (GM).

According to The Wall Street Journal, NissanRenault is interested in purchasing Saturn. Bloomberg, however, indicated that Nissan-Renault may be a partner of Penske’s potential bid. If Penske acquired the brand, they would distribute Saturn vehicles and outsource the assembly.

GM revealed that the Saturn brand along with Saab and Hummer were up for sale when unveiling their restructuring plans to Congress for governmental loans. While the Pontiac brand was originally to be a niche brand, GM had changed their plans recently and decided to eliminate the brand.

Telesto Ventures is an investment group that includes private equity firm Black Oak Partners LLC of Oklahoma City and several Saturn dealerships. Initially, Telesto will purchase Saturn branded cars from GM then act as a general retailer for foreign brands. Telesto is in talks with several foreign manufacturers.

The Ohio group includes many former senior auto company managers plus private financial backers, chemists and engineers who live in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Florida. This group plans to initially purchase cars from GM then purchase existing but closed plants due to automaker restructuring. Additionally, one of the partners indicated a willingness to accept some “legacy” cost in relation to the United Auto Workers. The Ohio group is also pursuing possible loans or other support from national and state governments.

GM is reviewing several offers for Saturn. GM has contracted with S.J. Girsky & Co. to advise them on the sale.

Eric Bogosian on writing and the creative urge

Thursday, April 17, 2008

Eric Bogosian is one of America’s great multi-dimensional talents. “There’s sort of three different careers, and any one of them could exist by itself, on its own two feet. There was that solo stuff, and then I started writing plays in the late seventies.” Although his work has spanned genres, most readers will recognize Bogosian for his acting, which has included a memorable performance in Woody Allen‘s Deconstructing Harry to co-writing and starring in the Oliver Stone movie Talk Radio (based upon his Pulitzer Prize-nominated play) to playing the bad guy in Under Siege 2 to his current role in Law & Order: Criminal Intent as Captain Danny Ross. They may not know, however, that he had collaborated with Frank Zappa on a album, worked with Sonic Youth, and was a voice on Mike Judge‘s Beavis & Butthead Do America. He started one of New York City’s largest dance companies, The Kitchen, which is still in existence. He starred alongside Val Kilmer in Wonderland and his play Talk Radio was recently revived on Broadway with Liev Schreiber in the role Bogosian wrote and made famous.

Currently at work on his third novel, tentatively titled The Artist, Bogosian spoke with David Shankbone about the craft of writing and his life as a creative.

Massive flooding in China; over 550 thousand evacuated

Saturday, June 18, 2011

Heavy June rainfall has forced China to evacuate more than 550,000 people from their homes. Massive floods have devastated the central and southern parts of the country, causing rivers to overflow their banks and triggering mudslides. The rains follow the worst drought in China in over 50 years, which has decimated crop yields.

Since June 13, the damage caused by the rainstorms has led to … the emergency evacuation of 671,200 people to safety.

Overall, 40 rivers have risen above safe limits, stressing dykes and dams including those on China’s largest waterway, the Yangtze River, which is flooding downstream while experiencing a severe drought near its source in the north.

China’s disaster level has been raised to four, the highest on the scale. In a statement on its website on Friday, China’s Ministry of Civil Affairs said, “Since June 13, the damage caused by the rainstorms has led to … the emergency evacuation of 671,200 people to safety.”

The current round of heavy rains began in early June. Since then, more than a million and a half people have been displaced in the central and southern regions of the country and at least 168 deaths have been reported. Meteorologists in Beijing are predicting more heavy rain in Sichuan, Guizhou, and Zhejiang this weekend.

[R]escue boats cannot go through those narrow lanes inside the village. A lot of them depend on their relatives rowing small wooden boats to get to them… It is hard to help these people inside there.

The government has mobilized its forces to aid in the massive evacuations. According to Reuters, local authorities are distributing a box of instant noodles and a carton of bottled water to those affected by the flood. But villagers have reported that survival is difficult, especially for those still trapped by the flood waters in small villages, and distribution of aid is slow, with some not receiving any.

A villager was quoted by Reuters: “To be frank, those rescue boats cannot go through those narrow lanes inside the village. A lot of them depend on their relatives rowing small wooden boats to get to them… It is hard to help these people inside there.” Another villager, Shou Pengfei said, “Some did not even get any relief items. There is no electricity and you get bitten by mosquitoes all the time.”

Some did not even get any relief items. There is no electricity and you get bitten by mosquitoes all the time.

According to the Beijing Climate Centre, weather trends have shifted drastically. Currently the rain is coming in shorter but fiercer bursts, with protracted periods of drought in between the torrential rain.

The heavy rainfall is not likely to reduce the crop failure caused by months of drought, especially in the north, the heart of China’s grain-growing bread basket, where many rivers have dried up. According to reports, the northern countryside has been left devastated by the droughts. Huge dams hundreds of meters wide are now small, muddy pools. Large cities such as Beijing are draining the underground water sources and China is facing a long-term water crisis.

Meanwhile, China is engaged in a huge multi-year engineering project designed to move water to the parched north and away from the flooded south. The North-South water project is a massive series of canals and pipes designed to carry water from the Yangtze and Yellow rivers to Beijing.

It is likely, analysts predict, that Chinese crop shortages will increase food prices worldwide. Even before the latest flooding, the severe drought in the north caused a shortfall in China’s crop yields that will likely affect the price of wheat and may propel a price increase in global markets.

Bangladesh security tightened following Pilkhana massacre and Bashundhara City fire

Friday, March 20, 2009

Following the Pilkhana massacre which occurred February 25 and 26 leaving 74 dead and the inferno at the Bashundhara City shopping mall complex March 13 leaving seven dead, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said security measures are being tightened countrywide across Bangladesh.

Fire drills will be enacted at all key-point installations (KPI). Fire fighting systems will be examined by the fire brigade and the public works department (PWD) to ensure functionality. Security measures will be enhanced supplementing areas under private security such as at the Bashundhara City Complex.

The Fire Service and Civil Defence Department requires modernization and needs new equipment to fight fires past the sixth floor of buildings. The Fire Brigade says it needs turntable ladders, snorkels, foam-tenders, lighting units, emergency tenders, fireproof uniforms, and rescue ropes for fire fighting and rescue operations. Transportation to fires is also an issue due to narrow roads, low electrical wires and congestion.

The Bangladesh National Building Code requires fire fighting equipment installed in buildings over seven floors. This code is to be monitored by authorities to ensure compliance with the new guidelines and to make sure buildings are being maintained.

The Bashundhara City Complex opened Monday for shoppers two days after Friday’s blaze. A probe is underway to determine the cause of the fire and to assess structural damage.

Loss of life was minimized as the blaze broke out on a Friday, the beginning of the weekend in Bangladesh, so offices in the upper floors were empty. The lower eight floors are used for shopping and the upper floors are all Bashundhara Group offices.

The mall is valued at Tk 7.0 billion (US$100 million). It is not known if the complex is covered by fire insurance.

It is estimated that it will take over two years to rebuild the area damaged by flames which were burned down to a skeleton. Bashundhara City’s technical advisor, Latifur Rahman, estimated damages at Tk 2.0 billion (US$29m).

Only one television cameraman has been allowed in to film the burnt area. None of the 2,500 shops, cinemas or cafes were burnt by the inferno. The seventh and eighth floors still experience smoke damage, and there was water damage to merchandise.

A three member committee is currently investigating the cause of the fire which will consist of Iqbal Khan Chowdhury, joint secretary of the ministry, representatives of the police, IGP Noor Muhammad, and fire brigade, Director General Abu Nayeem Md Shahidullah. The committee is required to report within the week with their findings. The forensics department is also sifting through the burnt remains.

The Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industries has also formed a committee which has begun interviewing witnesses and recording their testimony alongside the government committee.

It has been discovered that 150 closed circuit cameras were not being used when the fire started. Another mystery is why the mall fire fighting system has been found unused.

Why the fire burnt so fiercely is a matter to think….These matters seem to be mysterious

“In the shopping mall there is an ultra-technology elevator which runs even without electricity but we have found that locked,” Iqbal Khan Chowdhury, joint secretary (Police) of the home ministry, said. “Why the fire burnt so fiercely is a matter to think. We have to see if there was any incendiary substance there. These matters seem to be mysterious.”

Mall management has been asked to submit substances and items which would have been in the upper floors when the fire started. The fire erupted on the 17th floor and spread quickly to the two floors above and engulfed the three floors below. The aerial ladders belonging to the Fire Service and Civil Defence reached as high as the 13th floor of the 21-storey building.

Videos have been sent to the United States (US) for examination to assist in determining the cause of the fire and to help in the damage assessment. Experts from the US are expected to arrive soon.

Firefighters were brought to the rooftop of the 20-storey tower by helicopter. The only fatality in this operation was Baki Billa, a firefighter of Bashundhara City firefighting department, who fell when climbing down a rope from a helicopter to the roof of the building. Three other firefighters made the transition safely. At this same time, the chief security officer was safely rescued by the Bangladesh Air Force helicopter, a Bell 212. Six security officers of the complex also lost their lives.

I Have Septic Bursitis I Understand It Can Be Dangerous…What Is It?}

Submitted by: Nathan Wei

Before the days of antibiotics, septic bursitis was a potentially life-threatening problem.

Nowadays, because of higher index of suspicion as well as the presence of antibiotics, it should be, in most case, readily treatable. This article discusses this problem.

A bursa (plural=bursae) is a sack containing a small amount of fluid that serves as a protective cushion between bones and overlying muscles or between bones and tendons. Bursitis is inflammation of a bursa caused by repetitive use, trauma, infection, or a systemic inflammatory disease.

These sacks are lined with the synovium the same tissue that lines the inside of joints. Humans have approximately 160 bursae.

Bursitis most commonly affects the shoulder, elbow, hip, and knee. Symptoms of bursitis may include localized tenderness, edema, redness, heat, and limited ability to move the affected area.

When a bursa becomes infected, the condition is referred to as septic bursitis. In septic bursitis, trauma is the usual culprit. Trauma causes inoculation of bacteria into the bursa, which triggers an inflammatory response.

The two most commonly infected bursae are the olecrenon bursa at the elbow and the prepatellar bursa in the knee. The reason these two bursae get infected more easily is because of their location.

The olecranon bursa lies at the tip of the elbow. Because of its superficial location, it is easily traumatized from acute trauma or repetitive stress.

Trauma to the skin makes the olecranon a frequent location for infectious bursitis. The risk of septic bursitis increases in those who have a history of another chronic disease.

Chronic repetitive stress from pressure on the elbows is seen in hemodialysis patients, computer users, and chronic lung disease patients.

When inflamed, the olecrenon bursa at the tip of the elbow becomes swollen, red, and painful. Bending the elbow makes the pain worse. Low grade fever and chills may also be present.

The prepatellar bursa lies in front of the knee between the patella (kneecap) and the skin.

Infection can develop due to either trauma or constant friction between the skin and the patella, most commonly when frequent kneeling is involved. It can be seen in carpet-layers, coal miners, roofers, gardeners, electricians, and plumbers. Actually any activity involving a lot of kneeling and friction can lead to septic prepatellar bursitis.

The superficial location of the prepatellar bursa allows for rather easy introduction of bacteria. This is similar to the situation involving the olecrenon bursa.

Prepatellar bursitis presents with swelling, redness, heat, and pain involving the front of the knee. Bending the knee causes increased pressure over the bursa and increases pain.

(A quick note: there is also another bursa called the infrapatellar bursa. It is located below the knee cap and may be confused with the prepatellar bursa).

As mentioned earlier, septic bursitis occurs from the introduction of bacteria through trauma. It can also occur from the spread of infection from the skin adjacent to a bursa. Skin infection is called cellulitis.

It is less likely for deeper bursae to become infected because of their location. This can occur as a result of spread from septic arthritis (an infected joint) or from bacteria carried to the bursa from the blood.

Predisposing factors include diabetes, alcoholism, steroid therapy, kidney disease, trauma, and skin disease. A history of noninfectious inflammation of the bursa (as seen in rheumatoid arthritis, gout, and pseudogout) also increases the risk of septic bursitis.

Signs that favor the diagnosis of septic over simple inflammatory bursitis include: severe tenderness, extreme redness, heat, fever, and chills.

Laboratory tests may show an increase in white blood cell count and erythrocyte sedimentation rate. Blood cultures should be obtained if deep bursal infection is suspected.

Aspiration and analysis of bursal fluid from a suspected infected bursa should be performed when possible. Certainly, the most frequently infected bursae, such as the olecranon and prepatellar bursae should undergo this procedure. The use of ultrasound makes aspiration much more accurate.

Bursal fluid culture is the most important test for diagnosis.

Fluid should also be examined for crystals. Monosodium urate crystals can be seen in gout and calcium pyrophosphate crystals can be seen in pseudogout; however, the presence of crystals does not exclude concomitant infection.

All fluid should be cultured.

Patients with suspected septic bursitis should be treated with antibiotics while awaiting culture results. Superficial septic bursitis can be treated with oral antibiotics.

Deep bursal infection will generally require intravenous antibiotics.

Staph aureus is the most common bacteria, causing more than 80% of cases. Streptococcal species account for 5-20% of cases. Other organisms are less common.

An appropriate antistaph antibiotic should be started. This should be a penicillinase-resistant penicillin, such as oxacillin sodium (Bactosill), or a first-generation cephalosporin, such as cefaclor (Ceclor). Penicillin allergic patients can be treated with erythromycin.

The length of antibiotic treatment varies with the patient and the clinical situation. Uncomplicated septic bursitis presenting within a week of infection should be treated with a 10-14 day course. Aspiration should be repeated every 1-3 days while antibiotics are being administered. Antibiotics should be continued for 5 days past sterilization of bursal fluid as seen by aspiration. Again, the use of ultrasound can help with fluid detection since aspiration of a bursa without fluid may yield very little valuable material.

Patients who are immunosuppressed require a longer course of treatment of at least 15 days.

Deep bursal infections require prolonged antibiotic therapy and surgery is often required.

Surgical intervention, such as incision and drainage is needed in complicated cases.

Australian Senator arrives at Parliament dressed as a beer bottle

Thursday, March 13, 2008

Family First Senator Steve Fielding arrived at Parliament today, dressed as a beer bottle to raise awareness of a bill he intends to move in the Senate today. Senator Fielding will introduce a bill to establish a nationwide refund scheme for bottles and cans.

A similar scheme has operated in South Australia since 1977.

Family First wants a rebate of 10 cents per container, while the Australian Greens want 20 cents.

Speaking to reporters outside parliament dressed as a beer bottle, the Senator said the legislation would reduce litter by 25 per cent. “There’s a message in this bottle.”

“I am no longer trash, I’m cash.”

“We should get the litter off the streets and off the creeks and into recycling – that’s good for the environment and good for the community”

“It’s a win-win and I can’t understand why nationally we don’t have a scheme,” said Senator Fielding.

Senator Fielding said that recycling not only reduced litter, but also consumes less energy than making new containers from scratch. “Recycling a plastic bottle saves more than 80 per cent of the energy used to make a bottle from scratch and recycling aluminium cans uses just five per cent of the energy used making a can from scratch,” said the Senator.

Senator Bob Brown, leader of the Greens said while there were environmental benefits from recycling, it would also create thousands of new jobs.

“This is a very good way of recycling and reducing energy because a lot of energy goes into making cans and bottles,” Senator Brown told reporters.

“It will employ tens of thousands of people across Australia.”
