Arson charge for man who cleaned home with gasoline

Wednesday, April 8, 2009

Ernest Krajniak from Chilton, Wisconsin in the United States has been charged with arson after a lit cigarette ignited gasoline soaked clothes, setting his apartment ablaze.

On Friday April 3, Krajniak, 47, cleaned his entire apartment with about five gallons of gasoline, wiping everything down with the soaked clothes. After he was finished, he piled the soaked clothes in the center of his bedroom, lit a cigarette and then threw what was left of the still lit cigarette, into the pile.

Krajniak never called the fire department and never pulled the alarm. Instead he yelled ‘fire’ a few times then walked to the police station where an ambulance took him to a local hospital for the treatment of minor burns. The fire department later arrived to put out the blaze and his apartment was extensively smoke damaged. 11 other apartments were also damaged, leaving the occupants without a place to stay for at least a week.

“I should have never used that,” said Krajniak during a court appearance on Monday. He admitted to knowing that gasoline was highly flammable. He was arrested and his bond has been set a US$2,500. Krajniak’s next court appearance is scheduled for Monday, April 13. According to WISinfo.com, Krajniak has no prior criminal record.

The careless smoking of cigarettes has been blamed for thousands of fires across the U.S. In January 2008, an unnamed elderly woman in Buffalo, New York was receiving oxygen for medical problems in her home and lit a cigarette and began to smoke it. The oxygen coming from her mask then facilitated the ignition of her clothing, setting her on fire.

In the U.S. in 2002, only 4% of all residential fires were reportedly caused by smoking materials. These fires, however, were responsible for 19% of residential fire fatalities and 9% of injuries. The fatality rate due to smoking is nearly four times higher than the overall residential fire rate; injuries are more than twice as likely. Forty percent of all smoking fires start in the bedroom or living room/family room; in 35% of these fires, bedding or upholstered furniture are the items first ignited.

Top Ten Ways To Bind Your Documents

By Jeff McRitchie

If you are looking to give your companys image a boost one of the best ways is by improving your documents, reports, presentations and proposals. Here is a quick list of the top ten binding styles that companies use to prepare their documents. Check them out

* Comb Binding: This is the most popular binding style around and is also one of the least expensive. This style has 19 rings for a standard 11 letter sized document. You might have seen this style used on a cookbook or other presentations.

* Wire Binding: This style is also called twin loop wire, double loop wire or wire-o binding. The wire for this style comes in a C shape and you use a special wire closer to squeeze the spine until it is round. This style uses either 21 holes or 32 holes for a standard 11 document.

* Coil Binding: This one is also known as spiral coil binding, color coil binding or coilbind. The plastic performed spiral coil spins through the holes on the edge of the document and the ends of the coil are bent over using a special pair of pliers to keep the coil from spinning off the book.

* Velobind: Velobind is a strip binding system that uses two plastic strips along the front and the back of the document. The strips are riveted into place using a hot knife system that permanently binds the document together. This is a popular option for lawyers, government offices and other organizations where document security is a high priority.

* Thermal Binding: This style uses a preformed cover with glue down the spine. With thermal binding all you need to do is drop your pages into the cover, put the cover into the machine and let the document cool after it has been heated. The machine will heat the spine of the presentation, melt the glue and secure the pages into the cover.

* Unibind: Similar to thermal binding, Unibind also uses glue and heat. However, with Unibind the spines for the books are made from steel. This provides a longer lasting stronger bind for the documents. You can buy premade unibind covers, Unibind hard covers and even just the steel spines by themselves. Documents are very easy to bind with this style and it is a great option for creating photobooks.

* Proclick: Designed for use with the hole pattern used by twin loop wire, documents bound with Proclick are designed to be easily edited. Proclick spines snap shut and can be opened using a special zipper tool that comes with the supplies. This is a popular binding style for frequently accessed documents and for sales presentations that need to be updated in the field.

* Zipbind: Like Proclick, Zipbind spines are designed to be easily editable. However, Zipbind spines are designed for use with 19 hole combbind punched documents (Proclick spines are used with 32 hole wirebind punched paper). Documents bound with Zipbind can be opened and closed using a special zipper tool. Zipbind is a perfect companion product to a Comb binding system.

* Clear View Ring Binders: For many companies, clear view ring binders are still the option of choice for binding training manuals and internal corespondance. These binders usually have a clear vinyl overlay on the front, back and spine allowing users to customize the binder. These do not look as professional as some of the other binding options but are easy to use and are practical for documents that need to be frequently handled.

* Staples: As much as I hate to admit it. More documents are bound with staples and paperclips than with any of the above binding styles. However, I guarantee you that your documents will look better if you put the stapler away and professionally bind your reports, presentations and proposals. Especially if you are looking to take your companys image to the next level.

UK petrol prices rise to five-month high

Tuesday, March 28, 2006Petrol prices across the UK rose to an average of 91.1p per litre (U.S. $6.02 per U.S. gallon) of premium unleaded on Tuesday, which is the highest they have been for five months. Prices have been rising ever since December 2005, when they reached a trough in the current cycle of 87.6p a litre ($5.79/gal.), and have gained about 1.5p a litre (2.6 cents) in the last 10 days.

Across the UK, petrol prices ranged from 86.9p to 100.9p ($5.74 to $6.67) for unleaded and 89.9p to 105.9p ($5.94 to $7.00) for diesel.

These figures coincide with the results of a motorists survey from AA Personal Loans, which showed that most drivers are ignorant of petrol prices. Just 14% of those surveyed were able to correctly give the current price of petrol. Out of 1700 people surveyed, the lowest estimate was 69p a litre ($4.56/gal.) and the highest was £3 a litre ($19.83/gal.).

Friday, August 10, 2012

After two days of mourning, the West African nation Ghana is giving its late president John Atta Mills a state and military burial today at Geese Park, a bird sanctuary near the seat of government, Osu Castle, along the Atlantic Ocean.

His mortal remains, which were moved from the Banquet Hall in Accra, currently lie in a Ghana flag-draped casket at Ghana’s Independence Square (Black Star Square). The burial ceremony is ongoing as thousands have gathered to bid him farewell.

Eighteen heads of state; President of the ECOWAS Commission, Kadre Quedraogo; and Hillary Clinton, US Secretary of State are among the dignitaries present for the ceremony.

How Much Weight Can You Lose With Bariatric Surgery?

By Keith Pollow

Bariatric surgery, or weight loss surgery is a procedure designed to help people who are very overweight to shed pounds. Usually, bariatric surgery is reserved for those who are dangerously overweight but just can’t seem to drop the extra pounds through conventional means. Gastric bypass surgery and gastric banding are two types of surgery that are commonly used for losing weight. With each procedure, your stomach is reduced in size, so you are only able to take in a fraction of the calories that you normally would. The result is steady and sometimes rapid weight loss, as your body gets back to its normal size and shape.

The amount of weight that you will lose in pounds from bariatric surgery will vary depending on how much you weight at the beginning. Weight loss of a hundred pounds or more isn’t uncommon, as anyone having the surgery is quite overweight to start. On average, people who have gastric bypass surgery will lose up to 61 percent of their excess weight. For people who have gastric banding, they can expect to lose about 47 percent of their excess weight, on average.

Even though gastric bypass bariatric surgery typically results in greater weight loss, the results of the procedure are permanent. With gastric banding, the band can always be adjusted later on if necessary. Once the effects of the surgery even out, you can incorporate exercise into your routine and maintain a healthy diet to drop even more weight if it’s required. Bariatric surgery works wonderfully to lose a bunch of weight and help get people out of the danger zone, but it isn’t magic. You still have to do your part to keep it up and make it all possible.

Aside from just weight loss, bariatric surgery is also an effective way to help any weight-related health problems you may be experiencing. Serious issues such as obstructive sleep apnea, diabetes, acid reflux, high blood pressure and degenerative joint disease can all be helped with successful bariatric surgery. As the weight continues to melt off the body, you will notice many health conditions get easier and easier to deal with, and sometimes they may even disappear altogether.

Bariatric surgery can help you lose an awful lot of weight, correct health issues and basically give you your life back. If you are in a situation where you’re morbidly obese, you know that it’s a lot more than simply having some trouble when you try to tie up your shoes. It can seem almost impossible to find a comfortable position to lie or sit, and you probably wake countless times every night, struggling for air. That’s to say nothing of the social ramifications many obese people are forced to deal with. If you are overweight and it’s affecting your health and you just can’t seem to lose the weight yourself, ask your doctor if bariatric surgery might be an option. It never hurts to ask.

Forex Trading Hours: Can You Trade Forex 24/7?

Submitted by: G. B. Wiley

The forex market hours stretch from Monday morning in Sydney, Australia to Friday afternoon in New York. During that time the market is open somewhere around the globe at all hours of the day or night.

However it is not a 24/7 market because it does shut down on weekends. 24/5 would be more accurate. Even with the use of an automated trading system, like the Forex Megadroid Robot, 24/7 trading is not possible.

If you need to know the exact times that the markets open and close, you have to take time zones into consideration. Markets often use GMT as a universal way of expressing the time. GMT stands for Greenwich Mean Time, although some people call is UTC (Universal Coordinated Time). This is the standard (winter) time in Greenwich, London which is the point of zero longitude on the globe.

So, the normal forex market hours are 22.00 Sunday GMT to 22.00 Friday GMT. This is 10 pm in the UK in winter time.

New York is 5 hours behind the UK so the global forex market opens and closes at 5 pm Sunday/Friday in New York, 2 pm on the US west coast, 11 pm in Germany, 8 am Monday/Saturday in Sydney.

Things get a little complicated when you start to try to take summer time daylight saving into account. Daylight saving time means the actual time is ahead ny one hour in those countries. For countries in the southern hemisphere like Australia, whose summer months are from September through to March, daylight saving effects them at a different time of year to the northern hemisphere.

Here are the trading times of some of the big markets:

Sydney: 10 pm to 7 am GMT

Tokyo: 12 midnight to 9 am GMT

London: 8 am to 5 pm GMT

New York: 1 pm to 10 pm GMT

{Or we can express that in EST (Eastern US time)For New York, we can show that is EST}:

Sydney: 5 pm to 2 am EST

Tokyo: 7 pm to 4 am EST

London: 3 am to 12 noon EST

New York: 8 am to 5 pm EST

Now you can see how the markets are open 24 hours.

During this 24 hour trading cycle, the markets will experience good an bad times to trade. Markets can become volatile with lots of activity just after the opening of a major market. It is common for traders to stop trading for an hour or so after a major market opens, due to this high level of volatility and unpredictability.

The US dollar and the Euro are the two most traded currencies, although the dollar is way ahead being involved in 2.5 times the number of trades than the Euro is. This means that events in the USA have a greater impact on the financial markets than events in other countries. The New York market tends to slow down around 3 pm local time (8 pm GMT) and if you are involved in a US dollar pair, many traders choose to end their trading day at this time.

In theory, you can trade forex 24 hours a day (excluding weekends). Automated software like the Forex Megadroid Robot can even make this physically possible. However, a cautious trader will choose his times and will not be active during all of the forex market hours.

U.S. Senate majority goes to Democrats

Friday, November 10, 2006

George Allen, incumbent Republican Senator from Virginia, conceded the state’s mid-term election to Democratic challenger Jim Webb on Thursday. Democrats have now gained the six seats needed by the party to hold majority control of the Senate.

“The people of Virginia have spoken, they have spoken in a closely divided voice. We have two 49ers,” Allen said during the afternoon press conference in Arlington. Allen garnered 49.25% of the vote, compared to the 49.55% who supported Webb. “I do not wish to cause more rancor by protracted litigation that would not, in my opinion, alter the results.”

The concession by Allen in traditionally Republican Virginia follows what were once prospects for an Allen 2008 presidential bid. An easy Allen re-election campaign to the Senate was expected, but what came was the Democrats ability to frame the election as a national referendum on the war in Iraq. Democrats may have succeeded nationally to draw on the issue of Iraq, but local politics were very much in play in Northern Virginia.

According to the Virginia Pilot, “Unofficial returns gave Democratic nominee Webb a 120,000-vote advantage over Allen in Northern Virginia’s eight localities. But Webb trailed badly across most of the rest of the state and would have decisively lost the election without his Northern Virginia support.” The margin by which Webb won was 9,000 votes.

Allen’s formulaic stance against tax increases, whether for highway taxes to improve congested northern highway and commuter corridors, or outright fiscal conservativism of all taxes in the face of a burgeoning national deficit, worked against him.

The state constitutional amendment banning recognition of same-sex marriage supported by Allen, but opposed by Webb and Governor Tim Kaine, and most Northern Virginians, worked against Allen in the election.
