Teen broadcasts suicide online

Sunday, November 23, 2008

A Pembroke Pines, Florida teenager killed himself Wednesday, November 19, while broadcasting on the live video site Justin.tv. After making suicide threats and being encouraged by Justin.tv viewers and Bodybuilding.com forum members, Abraham K. Biggs, 19, committed suicide by taking an overdose of opiates and benzodiazepine, which had been prescribed for his bipolar disorder.

Biggs first began blogging about his planned suicide 12 hours before the actual event. He died after taking pills and lying on the bed in front of the webcam. After the broadcast, viewers who apparently thought it was a hoax posted messages such as “OMG”, “LOL”, and “hahahah”.

Hours later, after being alerted by viewers who had noticed that Biggs had stopped breathing, law enforcement and paramedics arrived, discovered his body, and covered the camera. The Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office has reportedly confirmed Biggs’ death.

According to Montana Miller of the Bowling Green State University, the circumstances of this case were not shocking: “If it’s not recorded or documented, then it doesn’t even seem worthwhile. For today’s generation it might seem, ‘What’s the point of doing it if everyone isn’t going to see it?'”

Biggs’ sister Rosalind was angry that neither the website nor its viewers reacted soon enough to save him. “They got hits, they got viewers, nothing happened for hours,” she said. She described him as “very happy” and “friendly and outgoing.” “On a normal day, you couldn’t really tell that he got as low as he did.” However, he did have relationship problems with his girlfriend, according to a friend.

Mental health professionals have warned about the possibility that other mentally troubled people would copy his actions. According to Dr. David Shaffer of Columbia University, “Any video showing it as heroic or romantic or glamorous could reduce the anxiety people might feel about suicide. It becomes a respectable behavior and lowers the threshold of suicide.” He and other psychiatrists recommend that potentially suicidal teens talk to others and “tell what’s going on.”

Top New Year’s Resolutions}

Submitted by: Salim Jordan

New Year’s Day is a time for rejuvenation and a fresh beginning. People often use this time to evaluate their habits and decide what things they should change in the upcoming year.

The absolute most common New Year’s resolution has to do with losing weight or getting in shape. The details may vary from person to person, but the overall goal is to get control of eating, exercising, and/or weight.

Another very common resolution is to quit smoking cigarettes. Most people realize how unhealthy smoking is but sometimes lack the willpower to put them down. However, considering goals in terms of resolutions often make them more achievable in the perception of the person trying to quit.

Along the same lines of quitting smoking, many people resolve to stop drinking alcohol for the New Year. While drinking may not be terribly destructive in moderation, excessive drinking causes serious problems. For this reason, it is a common quest to let go of this bad habit also.

Bad habits are commonly targeted as resolutions. Spending habits and debt accumulation therefore is frequently on the list of things that need to change. With credit card debt at an outrageous level and the fact that most people live paycheck to paycheck, this is an area that usually needs attention and sometimes gets it at the beginning of a new year.

Spending more time with friends and family is also one of the top resolutions for the New Year. It seems everyone’s schedules are so hectic; no one has time to stop and catch up with each other. During the holiday season, you often see family members and friends that may be neglected during the rest of the year. Enjoying time together reminds everyone how precious that time is and how you should make it a point to do it more often. This does not only apply to extended family; time with children and spouses is also important and taken for granted.

Simply enjoying life is something often forgotten about. We are so busy running to work and back home, to school and soccer practice that we never get around to playing in the floor with the kids or taking time to read the book we bought last week. Sometimes, resolutions are not about breaking bad habits, but creating better ones.

Similar to enjoying life, some people take this time to make major life changes like returning to school or changing careers. The idea of a new beginning sometimes sparks something inside to lead people to a new destiny. While quitting smoking or losing weight are big transitions, there are sometimes even more substantial goals put into place at this time of year.

Dozens of children killed in childcare center fire in Mexico

Saturday, June 6, 2009

35 children were killed and more than 40 were injured in a fire which roared through the ABC child care center in Hermosillo, Mexico on Friday afternoon. Among the injured were six adults, most who have yet to be identified. Over twenty other children have been hospitalized with burns. They have been transported to local hospitals and other medical facilities in the United States.

Neighbors, employees and firefighters broke walls to rescue unconscious children and babies from the fire in the converted warehouse building which was equipped with only one exit.

Three air ambulances, medical equipment and fifteen burn specialists were dispatched to the scene where children between the ages of six months and five years old perished from smoke inhalation. The majority of the injured and killed were under three years of age, said government officials.

Red Cross rescue workers say that 100 children were being cared for when the fire broke out. Sonora state Gov. Eduardo Bours confirmed that 142 children were in the child care center. Already, 27 of the 31 child fatalities have been identified, as parents continue to await news on their children.

Preliminary reports state that the fire may have started in the neighboring tire and car warehouse and spread to the childcare center. President of Mexico Felipe Calderón has placed the attorney general, Eduardo Medina-Mora in charge of the investigation into the cause of the blaze.

Mexico’s Social Security Institute also sent out resources to their privately run facility.

Hermosillo, population of over 700,000, is the capital of the Mexican state of Sonora 167 miles (269 km) from the American border.

Wikinews interviews 2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor Candidate Wayne Tseng

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Thursday, October 22, 2020

2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor candidate Wayne Tseng answered some questions about his campaign for the upcoming election from Wikinews. The Lord Mayor election in the Australian city is scheduled to take place this week.

Tseng runs a firm called eTranslate, which helps software developers to make the software available to the users. In the candidate’s questionnaire, Tseng said eTranslate had led to him working with all three tiers of the government. He previously belonged to the Australian Liberal Party, but has left since then, to run for mayorship as an independent candidate.

Tseng is of Chinese descent, having moved to Australia with his parents from Vietnam. Graduated in Brisbane, Tseng received his PhD in Melbourne and has been living in the city, he told Wikinews. Tseng also formed Chinese Precinct Chamber of Commerce, an organisation responsible for many “community bond building initiatives”, the Lord Mayor candidate told Wikinews.

Tseng discussed his plans for leading Melbourne, recovering from COVID-19, and “Democracy 2.0” to ensure concerns of minorities in the city were also heard. Tseng also focused on the importance of the multi-culture aspect and talked about making Melbourne the capital of the aboriginals. Tseng also explained why he thinks Melbourne is poised to be a world city by 2030.

Tseng’s deputy Lord Mayor candidate Gricol Yang is a Commercial Banker and works for ANZ Banking Group.

Currently, Sally Capp is the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, the Victorian capital. Capp was elected as an interim Lord Mayor in mid-2018 after the former Lord Mayor Robert Doyle resigned from his position after sexual assault allegations. Doyle served as the Lord Mayor of Melbourne for almost a decade since 2008.

Bbq’s And The Common Accidents}

Submitted by: Paula Gerie

Unsurprisingly barbeques can be the cause of many serious accidents throughout the summer months. As social gatherings are becoming increasingly popular during the summer, more and more people are having family gatherings and parties with friends, commonly taking place in the garden (as they do when inviting people over for a barbeque cooked meal). Unfortunately something else becoming increasingly popular is the number of casualties now beginning to take place with hundreds, if not thousands of people being admitted to A&E as a result of accidents which have involved a barbeque.

Injuries such as burns and cuts as a result of open flames and exposed equipment are fast becoming the most common forms of accidents. These barbeque related accidents are occurring within the home, however many are now reported to take place in a public setting such as a park or music festival. Understandably, as the summer months become warmer, the chances of accidents of occurring will gradually increase. Severe burns are the result of people carelessly igniting fires for their barbeques. For example, fuel is fast becoming a popular accelerant amongst many when attempting to light fires.

The fact is that barbeques should be exciting and enjoyable but above all, safe. It never hurts to take necessary precautions if it means protecting your family and friends. A barbeque should always be stable and steady on its feet especially smaller models such as the Weber One Touch BBQ; when purchasing a barbeque, always be sure to take this in to consideration. A barbeque should always be set up on a flat, level surface away from wood such as fences and sheds. Also, the heavier they are the better; unexpected gusts and gales are common during the summer, particularly in leafy areas where lengthy, over-hanging trees are known to set alight; the last thing you want is for the grill to take a tumble. If you have not used your barbeque for a lengthy period of time, ensure that it is in good condition and a usable state; always scan the grill for any loose components or damages that can put lives at risk. Several parts could do with being readjusted or even repaired. Allow an open space when lighting up the barbeque; lighting a barbeque in an enclosed space is particularly dangerous if something was to go wrong and setting it up early will ensure it can heat slowly, to a reasonable temperature, rather than rushing it and risking something going wrong.

One factor many people tend to overlook is the weather and humidity at the time of lighting the barbeque; when the weather is dry and hot (as it very regularly is in countries such as the U.S.A and Australia) care must be taken to reduce risks of grass fires which can very easily be ignited. It has already been acknowledged that using an accelerant such as fuel to light barbeque fires can have catastrophic affects; barbeques can quite literally explode as a result of this careless action.

Long-handled utensils are essential and can be purchased from Weber Accessories Online; always bear in mind that metal remains warm even after sometime, therefore keep all metal parts such as utensils and bar grills well out of the way and avoid them until you can guarantee they have significantly cooled down. Never leave a barbeque unattended in the presence of children, who must be kept away at all times; protect the grill with a Weber BBQ cover and ensure flames have been completely extinguished before packing everything up and storing the barbeque away for the summer.

Iranian International Master Dorsa Derakhshani discusses her chess career with Wikinews

Tuesday, April 14, 2020

In February 2017, the Iranian Chess Federation announced two teenage chess players, Dorsa Derakhshani and her younger brother Borna Derakhshani, were banned from representing the national team. The federation announced their decision although Dorsa Derakhshani had previously decided and informed the chess federation she did not wish to play for Iran.

Dorsa Derakhshani is currently 21 years old and holds the International Master (IM) as well as Woman Grand Master (WGM) titles. Her brother, Borna, plays for the English Federation and holds the FIDE Master title.

Dorsa Derakhshani was banned since she did not wear a hijab, an Islamic headscarf, while competing at the Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival in January 2017. Under the laws of Islamic Republic of Iran, hijab is a mandatory dress code. Her brother Borna Deraskhsani was banned for playing against Israeli Grand Master (GM) Alexander Huzman at the same tournament. Iran does not recognise the existence of Israel, and previously, Irani athletes have avoided playing against Israeli athletes.

Mehrdad Pahlavanzadeh, the president of the country’s chess federation, explained the decision to ban the players saying, “As a first step, these two will be denied entry to all tournaments taking place in Iran and in the name of Iran, they will no longer be allowed the opportunity to be present on the national team.” ((fa))Farsi language: ?????? ????? ?? ??? ??? ?? ??? ????? ?? ?? ???? ???????? ?? ?? ????? ? ?? ??? ????? ?????? ??????? ????? ??????? ? ???? ???? ???? ?? ??? ??? ?? ??????? ????. He further stated, “Unfortunately, something that should not have happened has happened and our national interest is paramount and we have reported this position to the Ministry of Sports.” ((fa))Farsi language: ????????? ?????? ?? ????? ????????? ?????? ??? ? ????? ??? ?? ?? ?? ???? ?????? ???? ? ?? ??? ???? ?? ?? ????? ???? ?? ????? ?????.

IM Dorsa Derakhshani, who currently studies at Saint Louis University in the United States and plays for the United States Chess Federation, discussed her chess career, time in Iran and the 2017 controversy, and her life in Saint Louis with a Wikinews correspondent.

Surgeons reattach boy’s three severed limbs

Tuesday, March 29, 2005A team of Australian surgeons yesterday reattached both hands and one foot to 10-year-old Perth boy, Terry Vo, after a brick wall which collapsed during a game of basketball fell on him, severing the limbs. The wall gave way while Terry performed a slam-dunk, during a game at a friend’s birthday party.

The boy was today awake and smiling, still in some pain but in good spirits and expected to make a full recovery, according to plastic surgeon, Mr Robert Love.

“What we have is parts that are very much alive so the reattached limbs are certainly pink, well perfused and are indeed moving,” Mr Love told reporters today.

“The fact that he is moving his fingers, and of course when he wakes up he will move both fingers and toes, is not a surprise,” Mr Love had said yesterday.

“The question is more the sensory return that he will get in the hand itself and the fine movements he will have in the fingers and the toes, and that will come with time, hopefully. We will assess that over the next 18 months to two years.

“I’m sure that he’ll enjoy a game of basketball in the future.”

The weight and force of the collapse, and the sharp brick edges, resulted in the three limbs being cut through about 7cm above the wrists and ankle.

Terry’s father Tan said of his only child, the injuries were terrible, “I was scared to look at him, a horrible thing.”

The hands and foot were placed in an ice-filled Esky and rushed to hospital with the boy, where three teams of medical experts were assembled, and he was given a blood transfusion after experiencing massive blood loss. Eight hours of complex micro-surgery on Saturday night were followed by a further two hours of skin grafts yesterday.

“What he will lose because it was such a large zone of traumatised skin and muscle and so on, he will lose some of the skin so he’ll certainly require lots of further surgery regardless of whether the skin survives,” said Mr Love said today.

The boy was kept unconscious under anaesthetic between the two procedures. In an interview yesterday, Mr Love explained why:

“He could have actually been woken up the next day. Because we were intending to take him back to theatre for a second look, to look at the traumatised skin flaps, to close more of his wounds and to do split skin grafting, it was felt the best thing to do would be to keep him stable and to keep him anaesthetised.”

Professor Wayne Morrison, director of the respected Bernard O’Brien Institute of Microsurgery and head of plastic and hand surgery at Melbourne’s St Vincent’s Hospital, said he believed the operation to be a world first.

Advice From The Pueblo Dentist: You Don T Have To Brush All Your Teeth

Advice From the Pueblo Dentist: You Don t Have to Brush ALL Your Teeth

by

Michele Johnson2

Just the ones you want to keep! We have all been instructed by our parents, guardians or Pueblo dentist to brush and floss our teeth twice a day. Look after your teeth is a phrase that all of us should be familiar with and the consequences of poor oral hygiene, even more so. Yet, in spite of our awareness of the importance of good oral health, there is this air of invulnerability that keeps so many people from taking the advice of the Pueblo dentist seriously. So now there is a new phrase to memorize and teach your children:

You don t have to brush all your teeth; just the ones you want to keep!

Ask the Pueblo Dentist: The Hazards of a Dirty Mouth

Keeping your teeth and gums clean requires regular (and thorough) brushing, flossing and check-ups with the

Pueblo dentist

. If it s been more than a year since your last appointment or teeth cleaning, then it s time to make that phone call! Why? No matter how neurotic we are about keeping our teeth clean (and very few patients are), plaque accumulates in places that are hard to reach and hard to keep clean. That soft white sticky substance on your teeth may seem harmless enough, but did you know that it consists of over 300 different varieties of bacteria? EW, gross! Exactly; and there are people who seldom brush their teeth more than once a day! The reality of the situation is that we need to understand what happens when we don t practice proper oral hygiene and healthy living habits. According to the Pueblo dentist, oral bacteria, if not kept to a minimum via brushing and flossing can cause the soft tissues in the mouth to become inflamed and infected. Gingivitis not only results in gums that are swollen and unsightly, but also bad breath, which is a guaranteed social deterrent!

Pueblo Dentist: Fancy Dental Implants? Here s How to Need Them

When an oral bacterial infection is left without treatment and exacerbated by further neglect of oral hygiene the decay can migrate down into the gingival sulci or tooth sockets. It is at this juncture that only professional intervention by the Pueblo dentist will be able to restore good oral health; or otherwise you face the inevitable need for dental implants as a result of tooth loss. Yes, tooth loss. One of the biggest causes behind tooth loss and the suite of nasty oral ailments that cause it is poor oral hygiene; in other words, neglecting to brush, floss and see the Pueblo dentist regularly. Other factors include a diet that is high in fats and sugar, tobacco use, excessive alcohol consumption and drug abuse.

A Final Note from the Pueblo Dentist

If you want to end up losing one or more of your pearly whites to decay and if you want to end up requiring

dental implants

, then poor oral hygiene, says the Pueblo dentist, is the fast track there. For those of us who care about the quality and health of our smiles, regular brushing, flossing and visits to the Pueblo dentist are a must.

So, remember to brush the teeth you want to keep for a lifetime: all of them!

US Federal Reserve raises interest rate from 5% to 5.25%

Thursday, June 29, 2006

The United States Federal Reserve has announced an increase of 25 basis points (0.25%) in the federal funds rate bringing it to 5.25 percent. It also announced its approval of a 25 basis point increase in the discount rate to 6.25 percent.

The federal funds rate is the interest rate at which depository institutions such as banks lend balances they maintain at the Federal Reserve (called federal funds) to other banks overnight. The discount rate is the interest rate that an eligible bank is charged to borrow short term funds directly from the central bank through the discount window.

In its statement, the Fed said that growth is moderating from its quite strong pace earlier in the year, which it partly attributed to a cooling of the housing market and the delayed effect of increases in interest rates and energy prices. The Fed noted that inflation measures were “elevated” in recent months and that while productivity gains have held down increases in labor costs and inflation expectations “remain contained”. However, it pointed out that high levels of resource utilization and high energy and commodity prices have the potential to sustain inflation pressures.

In its outlook over its future moves, the Fed statement said “Although the moderation in the growth of aggregate demand should help to limit inflation pressures over time, the Committee judges that some inflation risks remain. The extent and timing of any additional firming that may be needed to address these risks will depend on the evolution of the outlook for both inflation and economic growth, as implied by incoming information.”

Ontario Votes 2007: Interview with Family Coalition Party candidate Mark Morin, Chatham—Kent—Essex

Wednesday, September 26, 2007

Mark Morin is running for the Family Coalition Party in the Ontario provincial election, in the Chatham—Kent—Essex riding. Wikinews’ Nick Moreau interviewed him regarding his values, his experience, and his campaign.

He did not reply to the questions “Which of your competitors do you expect to pose the biggest challenge to your candidacy? Why?” and “Of the decisions made by Ontario’s 38th Legislative Assembly, which was the most beneficial to your this electoral district? To the province as a whole? Which was least beneficial, or even harmful, to your this riding? To the province as a whole?” Some spelling corrections have been made.

Stay tuned for further interviews; every candidate from every party is eligible, and will be contacted. Expect interviews from Liberals, Progressive Conservatives, New Democratic Party members, Ontario Greens, as well as members from the Family Coalition, Freedom, Communist, Libertarian, and Confederation of Regions parties, as well as independents.
