Record number of bicycles sold in Australia in 2006

Thursday, January 4, 2007

Bicycle sales in Australia have recorded record sales of 1,273,781 units for 2006, exceeding car sales by 32 percent. It is the fifth year in a row that the bicycle industry has sold more than one million units, a figure yet to be realised by car manufacturers.

The Cycling Promotion Fund (CPF) spokesman Ian Christie said Australians were increasingly using bicycles as an alternative to cars. Sales rose nine percent in 2006 while the car market stalled. Mr Christie said people were looking to cut their fuel costs and improve their fitness.

Mr Christie said organisations were beginning to supply bicycles as a company vehicle. “There is an emerging trend towards people using bikes as their official company-supplied vehicle in place of the traditional company car,” he said.

“Some of Australia’s biggest corporations now have bicycle fleets, and when you add in government organisations, we now know of at least 50 organisations which operate fleets of bikes.”

“Although the company bicycle is a long way from taking over from the company car, it’s an important trend when you consider that nearly half of all cars sold are to company fleets.”

The CPF claims most commutes to work are less than 5 kilometres (3 miles) making bicycle travel a viable alternative.

Personal Support Worker (Psw) Jobs In 2009 And Beyond

By Susan Cassel

In 2008 the Government of Ontario took initiative towards the a real problem in the province. With the aging of baby boomers, the province is in need of more personal support workers. To address this the government announced an increase in funding of $107 million over the next three years. This money will be used to increase wages for those currently working in the field and also to help create an additional 2500 positions.

Increased funding and the creation of a few thousand positions. Sounds great, doesn t it? So how do I sign up? Will I require a few years of schooling and a certificate/diploma to gain employment?

As with pretty much an job, qualifications will differ. But to be honest, with the deficit of workers to positions, this is one of the few careers where the job searcher is in the drivers seat.

Many potential employers are trying to combat this deficit of workers by offering on the job paid training. It is possible to bypass entering a school (and taking a course) and gain employment tomorrow if you is able to find an employer that is willing to train new employees. On the job training will take a few weeks. You will have to obtain your CPR, in most cases pass a police check, and learn and adhere to the rules and regulations of the specific workplace.

Of course I m not trying to keep anyone from pursing an education. While it isn t absolutely necessary there are some tangible benefits to having a certificate or diploma.

Let s begin with the obvious. A personal support worker with a piece of paper will be more attractive to prospective employers, which should realistically translate into one s resume getting put to the top of the pile.

Depending on where you take your course, courses can be completed in as little as eight months and for only around $2000. College courses (non-accelerated) last two years and cost around $7000 but are seen in higher regard by employers.

Secondly a graduate typically begins at a higher wage. They will also have a greater chance at gaining wage increases in the future. I know of some employers that will pay an additional $1.50 an hour for PSW s with a certificate. Over the course of a forty hour week this adds up to $60 and over the course of a year, assuming fifty weeks of work, this adds up to an additional $3000 per year. It doesn t take a mathematician to see that this can quickly add up over the course of a decade or two.

While these are the two main advantages of gaining certification one can also count on an increased credit score (for college completion), networking , alumni advantages which can include conferences, library access, etc.

In life we all have to make trade-offs. Consider your current position when judging whether or not obtaining schooling is for you. Time and money, along with family responsibilities are a few examples of the things you should consider before making a decision.

But frankly the job market is good for those with or without certification. If you re looking for employment in this tough job market that also has strong career potential consider becoming a personal support worker.

Zara Kay tells Wikinews about her non-profit organisation Faithless Hijabi

Monday, July 6, 2020

A number of Muslim-majority countries around the world implement Shari’a — commonly known as Islamic law — and have laws against apostasy and blasphemy. Numerous times, over the years, people have been sentenced to death penalty for renouncing Islam. Back in 2018, a Pakistani journalism student Mashal Khan was killed by a mob lynch after he was accused of blasphemy. At times there have been protests against the restrictions on free speech in Islam.

Other than the restriction of free speech, many Muslim majority countries have declared homosexuality as a capital crime, and observe a strict dress code for women. Iran has banned a number of female chess players for not wearing a hij?b. An Iranian woman was sentenced 20 years for removing hij?b while protesting the strict dress code.

Wikinews had gotten in touch with Tanzanian-born ex-Muslim Zara Kay to discuss the struggles an ex-Muslim woman faces, as well as her organisation: Faithless Hijabi.  Faithess Hijabi is an organisation which helps other ex-Muslim women by sharing their stories and experiences.  Its Facebook page has over 7000 likes, and Zara Kay, who identifies herself as an antithiest, had prefiously helped a Saudi teenager Rahaf Mohammed escape to Canada.

The following is the interview with Zara Kay that took place last year.

Preparations for inaugural Bathurst International Motor Festival begin

Wednesday, February 22, 2006

The Bathurst Regional Council has begun preparing the Mount Panorama motor racing circuit for the inaugural Bathurst International Motorsport Festival (BIMF) to be held between April 13 and 16, 2006. The Mount Panorama motor racing circuit is considered to be the home of motorsport in Australia.

Council’s staff have been busy cleaning the facilities, erecting signage, checking pedestrian bridges and inspecting the track surface for the past few days.

The BIMF will be the first event to be held at the 6.2 kilometre circuit over Easter since 2000. In 2000, Event Management Specialists held the first motorcycle racing event since 1990, but due to EMS going bankrupt a short time after their 2000 event was ran and the inability of the then Bathurst City Council to find another promoter, the Easter event was canned.

The BIMF is inspired by the Festival of Speed and Goodwood Revival in the United Kingdom. The Bathurst Regional Council and event promoter Global Entertainment Team promise that the event “will cater for all motoring enthusiasts, collectors and historians”.

According to the BIMF website, the on-track program consists of:

 • Manufacturers showcasing their vehicles and track times
 • Historic touring car races
 • Aussie racing car races
 • Australian GT sports car
 • Parade laps by car clubs
 • Parade laps and races by “Legends of Motorsport”
 • Stunt car and bike events
 • Rally cars
 • Displays of cars from all eras of Mount Panorama’s history
 • The chance for patrons to purchase a ride around the circuit in a race car.

Off the track, the organisers have promised manufacturer displays, merchandise stands, music, joyflights, Off-road demonstrations and joyrides, autograph sessions and interviews with influential people in the Australian motor industry.

Insurance Basis

Submitted by: Mary Finger

Insurance coverage concerns were expressed by a friend who is about to embark on a trip overseas not to mention concern about inoculations. In this case, her doctor recommended medicines against tetanus and hepatitis. Taking this inveterate traveler into consideration, you will be advised to take the shots, make a couple of phone calls, and have a good trip. If you want the latest information on the health situation abroad then you need to place a call to the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta and if you want further advice regarding health issues or other important warnings ranging from crime statistics to political unrest that might affect your travels then you should consult with the State Department’s Citizens Emergency Center in Washington.

When no inoculations are required, vaccines will be able to do as much to allay underlying anxieties as to assure good health while you travel abroad. In this case, this will help you gain peace of mind considering that you will be traveling far from hearth and home. Here, you might also be thinking about whether or not you need extra insurance coverage. Here, the answer should be a matter of common sense considering that it is a healthy question. In terms of the kind of insurance coverage to purchase, deciding should involve a consideration of your itinerary.

In this case, you might be traveling alone or as part of a small group of travelers and you can have a lifeline in extra medical coverage if you are going to a remote and primitive part of the world where there are no hospitals, no medical supplies, few physicians, and where you are not likely to find anyone who speaks English. But if you are planning a trip down to Stockholm where medical facilities are sophisticated and physicians are abundant and where English is a second language then added insurance is more of reassuring than necessary. With regard to this, what you can choose from is a broad spectrum of travel insurance plans.

In terms of travel insurance plans, there are two categories which are medical coverage and travel assistance plans. If you have medical coverage, you will be able to pay for medical treatment such as emergency surgery, hospitalization, and prescription drugs. In this case, what are covered by travel assistance include health related emergencies such as patient evacuation to a nearby hospital, travel costs for family or friend to a patient’s bedside, repatriation of children stranded abroad by illness of a parent or guardian, and referral to English speaking physicians. Here, translators’ fees, lost luggage, and legal referrals are also part of the coverage. What some companies provide single adults are plans ranging from $35 to about $60 for a 14 day policy. Before buying anything, you should compare several plans that vary substantially when it comes to the benefits offered by insurance agencies. Compare various policy limits on non-emergency situations, pre-existing conditions, accidental death, dismemberment, flight delay and trip cancellations and subscriber access to 24 hour telephone customer service hot lines.

Another thing you should check is whether your current policies are valid for travel within the United States. You should also know how far you must be from home for the policy to become effective. To avoid duplicating any new offers for medical and property loss benefits, carefully read your regular personal health and homeowner’s insurance policies before signing any contract.

‘Family Guy’ returns to US television, loses in ratings to ‘Housewives’

Tuesday, May 3, 2005

The animated series Family Guy returned to the FOX television network with a new episode Sunday for the first time since it was taken off the schedule three years ago. Although the show kept most of its audience that lead-in The Simpsons gave, FOX was still fourth out of five major broadcast networks in the half-hour, losing most notably to ABC‘s hit Desperate Housewives (UPN, the other major American broadcast network, does not air original programming on Sundays).

However, the season premiere of Family Guy and the series debut of American Dad (which helped usher in what the network termed “The New FOX Sunday”) helped bring FOX to the #2 spot out of five networks in the crucial 18 to 49 demographic, one of the most important to advertisers in the key May sweeps period. “Sweeps” occurs four times a year and helps networks and independent affiliates determine how much a fixed amount of time for commercial advertisement will cost (the higher the ratings, the more revenue for the networks selling the time to advertisers).

On the whole, Family Guy averaged a 6.3 rating in the overnights as posted by Zap2It. While the overnight ratings are fairly accurate, the numbers are preliminary and are subject to minor change. One ratings point is equal to 1,096,000 households, as there are now 109,600,000 households in the United States with at least one television. This translates into a little more than 6.9 million households whose sets were tuned into Family Guy, as recorded by the sample of “Nielsen families,” who record their viewing habits and contribute to the ratings process the US uses. The use of the word “share” in the article means that it is the rough percentage of viewers with their sets on at that hour tuning into a certain program. For example, nine percent of viewers in the United States with their televisions on at 9 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time were tuned to Family Guy.

This only added up to a 9 household share for the hour, compared to an 11 share for Law & Order: Criminal Intent on NBC, a 14 share for a CBS Hallmark Hall of Fame movie of the week (traditionally only aired during the key sweeps periods), and a 23 share for the aforementioned Desperate Housewives. Averaged with the performance of American Dad, a cartoon produced by Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane, FOX earned a mere 5.8 rating/9 share for the hour.

The episode revolved around a big scheme Peter Griffin, the main character of the series, conjured. To give his wife Lois (who no longer finds him sexually attractive) a second honeymoon in order to “spice up” their love life, he pretends to be actor Mel Gibson so they can stay in a new luxury hotel for free. Peter stumbles upon a sequel to the film The Passion of the Christ, and vows to keep the movie from ever seeing the light of day. To get the movie back, Gibson kidnaps Lois and keeps her captive on top of Mount Rushmore, which leads to a scene in which the three battle on top of the monument, in a homage to the film North by Northwest.

State of emergency declared in New York over H1N1 swine flu virus

Thursday, October 29, 2009

According to US health officials, New York state governor David Paterson has declared a state of emergency in the state as a result of the H1N1 swine flu outbreak.

The Associated Press news agency reports that the six-page declaration was issued because at least 75 people have died of H1N1 related illnesses in New York since April. Three have died from H1N1 related illnesses just this past week. The declaration also says that human cases of the virus are on the rise.

Paterson says he issued the declaration because “a disaster has occurred throughout New York State, for which the affected local governments are unable to respond adequately.”

The declaration will allow health officials more access to the H1N1 vaccine and the seasonal flu shot. It will also allow for an increase in the number of vaccine doses available in the state and will allow more health care facilities to administer the vaccine, including dentists and pharmacists. Schools with health centers will also be allowed to administer both vaccines.

Despite the declaration, officials stressed that there is no reason to worry. A spokeswoman for the New York State Department of Health, Claire Pospisil, said that “it [the declaration] helps us to be more prepared.”

The order came shortly after US president Barack Obama declared a national emergency last Saturday, a response to the spreading of the virus, which has now been circulated in 46 states.

The Importance Of Choosing The Right Anti Wrinkle Cream

Submitted by: Baird Angus

Like many other things there is a huge variety of anti wrinkle cream to choose from. How effective these various creams are is often dependent on how wisely you choose your products. First of all think of what exactly you want to accomplish with the specific cream you eventually choose.

There are many benefits that can be experienced by using various types of anti wrinkle cream. Almost all of these have the ability to make you look younger to some degree. What you need to consider however is how much younger you want to look and what specific areas you want to target. For example, some creams target the specific problem of excessive wrinkles around the eyes while others focus on the area around the mouth. Then there are still other variations of anti wrinkle cream that benefits the entire facial area. These are often considered to be the best choices by the majority of people.

The first thing you need to consider very carefully is the ingredients used to create the anti wrinkle cream which you have chosen. This means you need to read the label before you even consider putting something on your face. Remember that your face is often the most sensitive area on your body and you should avoid using anything that contains harsh chemicals that could damage the skin.

For the most part anti wrinkle cream is made with this knowledge in mind. It is not difficult to find many products which are created from ingredients which are all natural. This means that these products are completely safe to use on your face even around the area of your eyes.

When you use the right anti wrinkle cream you have the ability to wipe away years of stress and worry quite easily. After all these are the most common issues which lead to the signs of aging in the first place. Unfortunately it is difficult to find a product that will eradicate all signs of aging like we would like.

When you choose the right anti wrinkle cream it is not unheard of to look as much as ten to twenty years younger than your actual age. When products such as this are discovered it often makes the users very happy and leads them to feel much better about themselves emotionally. This of course leads to a much stronger sense of security and confidence. After all this is the reason many people turn to anti wrinkle cream to begin with.

If you are looking for a sure fire way to know that you have chosen the right product for you all you have to do is look in the mirror and ask yourself a couple of simple questions. First of all can you see the difference since you started using the anti wrinkle cream? Does your skin look and feel softer and smoother? Are there fewer lines and wrinkles around your eyes and mouth and on your forehead? If you answered yes to these questions then you have found a product that produces visible results.
