Victoria Wyndham on Another World and another life

Thursday, December 13, 2007

Victoria Wyndham was one of the most seasoned and accomplished actresses in daytime soap opera television. She played Rachel Cory, the maven of Another World‘s fictional town, Bay City, from 1972 to 1999 when the show went off the air. Wyndham talks about how she was seen as the anchor of a show, and the political infighting to keep it on the air as NBC wanted to wrest control of the long-running soap from Procter & Gamble. Wyndham fought to keep it on the air, but eventually succumbed to the inevitable. She discusses life on the soap opera, and the seven years she spent wandering “in the woods” of Los Angeles seeking direction, now divorced from a character who had come to define her professional career. Happy, healthy and with a family she is proud of, Wyndham has found life after the death of Another World in painting and animals. Below is David Shankbone’s interview with the soap diva.

Wikinews interviews Rocky De La Fuente, U.S. Democratic Party presidential candidate

Thursday, March 31, 2016

Businessman Rocky De La Fuente took some time to speak with Wikinews about his campaign for the U.S. Democratic Party’s 2016 presidential nomination.

The 61-year-old De La Fuente resides in San Diego, California, grew up in Tijuana, and owns multiple businesses and properties throughout the world. Since getting his start in the automobile industry, De La Fuente has branched out into the banking and real estate markets. Despite not having held or sought political office previously, he has been involved in politics, serving as the first-ever Hispanic superdelegate to the 1992 Democratic National Convention.

De La Fuente entered the 2016 presidential race last October largely due to his dissatisfaction with Republican front-runner Donald Trump. He argues he is a more accomplished businessman than Trump, and attacks Trump as “a clown,” “a joke,” “dangerous,” and “in the same category as Hitler.” Nevertheless, De La Fuente’s business background begets comparisons with Trump. The Alaskan Midnight Sun blog described him as the Democrats’ “own Donald Trump.”

While receiving only minimal media coverage, he has campaigned actively, and according to the latest Federal Election Commission filing, loaned almost US$ 4 million of his own money to the campaign. He has qualified for 48 primary and caucus ballots, but has not yet obtained any delegates to the 2016 Democratic National Convention. Thus far, according to the count at The Green Papers, De La Fuente has received 35,406 votes, or 0.23% of the total votes cast. He leads among the many lesser-known candidates but trails both Senator Bernie Sanders who has received nearly 6.5 million votes and front-runner Hillary Clinton who has just shy of 9 million votes.

With Wikinews reporter William S. Saturn?, De La Fuente discusses his personal background, his positions on political issues, his current campaign for president, and his political future.

Fires out at the Hertfordshire Oil Storage Terminal

Tuesday, December 13, 2005

After two days, the 2005 Hertfordshire Oil Storage Terminal fire has finally been extinguished.

The fires began after a series of explosions early on the morning of 11 December 2005. The terminal, known locally as the Buncefield Depot, is an oil storage facility located near Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire in the United Kingdom. These were some of the largest explosions ever to occur in the country and the incident has been described as the biggest of its kind in peacetime Europe.

The Hertfordshire Fire Service chief Roy Wilsher said: “There are still some small bund (concrete container) fires, but the tanks are out.”

Fire crews would remain at the scene over the next few days cooling the area to ensure fires did not break out again, he said.

A few residents are being allowed to return to their homes within an exclusion zone set up around the site.

FIA lays out cost cutting measures for Formula One

Friday, December 12, 2008

The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) has revealed the details of the cost-cutting measures for Formula One that were agreed on Wednesday in talks with the teams. The new measures are expected to save the manufacturer teams at least 30 percent of their budgets next season, with the savings increasing as more of the measures are introduced in the future. The raft of agreements has saved the teams from the threat of standardised engines until at least 2013 and savings for independent teams are predicted by the FIA to be even higher.

For next season the engines will now have to last 3 races, rather than thee current 2 race requirement, and each driver is allowed up to 8 engines throughout the year and the team is allowed a further 4 for testing. Engines will now be rev limited to 18,000 rpm and Renault managed to obtain agreement from the other teams for modifications of its engine to bring it into line with the other engines in the sport. Testing will be affected, with in season testing banned and wind tunnels not to exceed 6:10 scale or 50 metres per second. Teams will be expected to share fuel and tyre data at grand prix in an effort to save on the manpower requirement at the race weekends. The teams will also have to close their factories for 6 weeks a year. The FIA will also be conducting research into the possibility of using a medal system for F1 next season, an idea championed by Bernie Ecclestone, the boss of Formula One Management.

Starting in 2010 more changes will come into force, with the introduction of the cheaper engines being made available to independent teams, costing less than €5 million per season. Any contracts for the cheaper 2010 engines will have to be signed by the 20th of December, 2008. Another engine freeze will occur at the start of the 2010 season, with the engines from 2010 continuing through to the end of 2012. The FIA also intends to try to introduce standardised transmission systems in 2010 and will look at chassis design to determine which aerodynamic parts will be standardised or allowed to be competitive differentiators. Races will see more changes in 2010 with the use of tyre warmers and refuelling banned, and the possibility of shorter race distances has been put forward pending market research. What work the teams can engage in at the factories will also be further limited this season to reduce the manpower and other running costs.

The FIA has raised the possibility of a new power train entirely to be developed for the 2013 season, in consultation with the Formula One Teams Association, and will also discuss making Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems (KERS) compulsory from 2010. KERS, which is being introduced as a voluntary measure in 2009, has divided the teams with some embracing the technology while others, such as Ferrari, have criticised it.

Toothpaste fills cavities without drilling

Thursday, February 24, 2005

A paste containing synthetic tooth enamel can seal small cavities without drilling. Kazue Yamagishi and colleagues at the FAP Dental Institute in Tokyo say that the paste can repair small cavities in 15 minutes.

Currently, fillers don’t stick to such small cavities so dentists must drill bigger holes. Hydroxyapatite crystals, of which natural enamel is made, bond with teeth to repair tiny areas of damage.

Yamagishi and colleagues have tested their paste on a lower premolar tooth that showed early signs of decay. They found that the synthetic enamel merged with the natural enamel. The synthetic enamel also appears to make teeth stronger which will improve resistance to future decay. As with drilling, however, there is still the potential for pain: The paste is strongly acidic to encourage crystal growth and causes inflammation if it touches the gums.

The paste is reported in the journal Nature.

Understanding the Risks of High Cholesterol

by

Derek HUnderstanding The Risks of High CholesterolCholesterol is one of the lipids normally found in the bloodstream. It plays essential role in the formation of hormones, cells membranes and body tissues. The liver processes approximately 1000 mg of cholesterol a day to help the body carry out important processes. Problems arise when levels of cholesterol is higher than normal. High cholesterol

is the major risk for cardiovascular diseases and it contributes greatly to mortality of both men and women around the world. Lowering high cholesterol levels is therefore essential in reducing its associated health risks.

Diet, lifestyle and genetic factors all contribute to high cholesterol levels. Genetic risks for high cholesterol exists however factors the influence increase of cholesterol is within our control. Diet high in saturated fats and low fiber has been identified as one of the significant causes of high cholesterol, specifically, low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. People who are fond of eating fast food and processed foods are likely to have high cholesterol because of the high saturated fat content in these foods. Sedentary lifestyle is another contributing factor of high cholesterol, which if coupled with unhealthy diet, results in obesity. Obese individuals are expected to have high cholesterol because cholesterol levels increases as body weight increases. Risks of High CholesterolThe body has two types of cholesterol which serve as fat transporters. HDL and LDL are produced by the complex formed between protein and lipids. LDL carries about two-thirds of blood cholesterol while HDL carries one third of the total blood cholesterol. The two types of cholesterol have opposing effects on the cardiovascular system, that is, while HDL protects us against heart diseases, LDL promotes the development of heart diseases. High cholesterol levels increase the risk for heart diseases including atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease, production of thrombosis and increased risk for stroke.LDL carries the harmful blood cholesterol to the cells. The LDL receptors in the cells bind the LDL circulating in the bloodstream, which allows the cholesterol to enter the cells and exert its beneficial effects. However, when the blood has high cholesterol levels, the cholesterol receptors in the cells’ surface are greatly reduced. This leaves a dangerously high level of LDL cholesterol in the circulation. Eventually, the cholesterol deposits itself in the walls of the arteries, builds up and hardens into plaque, resulting in a condition known as atherosclerosis. Individuals with atherosclerotic arteries have elevated risks other cardiovascular diseases. Lowering the Risks of High CholesterolThe key to lower the risks associated with high cholesterol levels is to understand its cause. While genetic factors are difficult to control, diet, lifestyle and other factors are treatable conditions. Dietary and lifestyle changes are two important conditions in treating high cholesterol and its associated risks. However, in most cases changes in the diet and lifestyle are not enough to lower the risk of developing heart diseases. Medications and other treatments are still required. High cholesterol levels can be safely reduced to healthy levels naturally. Taking daily supplements such as Vasacor essentially bring down the levels of LDL cholesterol and it promotes a healthy cardiovascular system. Vasacor has active ingredients which aid in the body’s natural way of lowering high cholesterol

. Vasacor mainly works by blocking ingestion of cholesterol by cells and promotes excretion of cholesterol by the liver thereby lowering the amount of cholesterol circulating in the blood. Everyone wants to be protected killer diseases. Fortunately, Vasacor was developed to help combat high cholesterol and prevent future increase in cholesterol levels.

High cholesterol

in the bloodstream leads to serious heart diseases. Fortunately, Vasacor was developed to address high cholesterol level and protects us from its associated risks.
